The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office June 17-22, 2023.
CITIZEN ASSIST
June 22
7:38 a.m., Bell Street, Newbury. Caller is having a surveyor come out at 8 a.m. to put stakes on property line because of ongoing issue with neighbor. Neighbor has threatened to shoot caller over property line in past so would like a deputy there to make sure there are no issues. Deputy spoke with neighbor who already was told about survey crew coming to area and has no problem with the survey crew doing their job. Complainant advised to stay on her property while company does its job.
CITIZEN DISPUTE
June 17
5:01 p.m., Ravenna Road, Newbury. Neighbors had an argument this morning. 20 minutes ago caller let out her dogs and neighbor threw a plastic ship at caller and now her finger is bruised. Neighbor is caller’s sister in law. Caller refusing EMS. Parties are separated at this time. Deputy advised.
CO POISONING
June 17
5:09 p.m., Auburn Road, Munson. Sisters of Notre Dame five females with headaches and other symptoms from earlier call. They are outside. No odor reported, just symptoms. Spoke with Munson FD chief who advised they had five cases of CO poisoning. They do not need assistance at this time.
FRAUD
June 18
10:13 p.m., Kinsman Road, Newbury. Caller lives in Iowa and was scammed by an ad on Indeed regarding a job opening at Newbury Fire Department. Caller gave out all of his personal information. Dispatch spoke to fire department and this is fraud as they have no listings on Indeed. Caller said he gave out all his personal information to a person posing as the Newbury fire chief. Caller advised to file a report with his local police department in Iowa, where he currently lives.
June 21
5:20 p.m., Madison Road, Huntsburg. Caller was setting up a student loan online and believes they were scammed. Loan money was sent, but school did not receive it. Caller stated she contacted a company for student loan forgiveness. After an auto payment was sent from her checking account. She received an email stating loan company did not receive her payment. It was determined the loan forgiveness was a scam and she was out $366.33. Both caller and her mother provided their personal information to the scammer. Advice given to set up a Transunion account to monitor the use of their SSNs. They already contacted their bank which stopped all payments from their account and changed account numbers.
HARASSMENT
June 18
9:44 a.m., Bass Lake Road, Munson. Caller’s husband bought an item online and made payments through PayPal. Caller then believed it to be a scam and reported seller to PayPal and the unknown male (from India) sent the call to his address as a way to scare him into making sure he got his money from PayPal. Advice given.
June 21
9:49 a.m., Music Street, Newbury. Complainant received a text message from neighbor last night after the township zoning meeting. Neighbor was upset the neighbors did not approve a variance for solar panels he wants to install on his property on Music Street. Messages were not threatening, but were upsetting to complainant. Wanted incident documented in case they have any more problems. Complainant advised to block any text messages and telephone calls from neighbor.
1:39 p.m., Aquilla Road, Claridon. Report taken. Littering and flammable liquids in bottles with paper towels.
June 21
9:31 p.m., Turner Drive, Aquilla. Caller states altered images of him are being posted on Facebook. Caller states people are upset with him because he has made comments about the camping site being illegal. The photos were not threatening in nature and consisted of caller’s Facebook profile photo with devil horns and the other where he had green eyes. Caller advised the photos would have to have a threatening nature to where caller’s life or well-being would be in jeopardy for criminal charges. Caller advised of possibly taking the matter up in civil court and to block the Facebook profile.
THEFT
June 17
4:48 p.m., Ravenna Road, Chardon. Attempted theft from a vehicle, white male, 20-30 years old, wearing an Army green T-shirt and blue jeans. Male ran into the woods when owner caught him. Door to F150 was open and male was partially inside the truck. Report taken, statement obtained, photos taken.
TRAFFIC OFFENSE
June 17
9:45 a.m., Ravenna Road, Newbury. Deputy passed motorcycle doing 108 mph northbound 44 in curves by Music Street. Another deputy sat stationary at 44/87 and motorcycle did not pass. May have either turned off or made it through the intersection prior to responding officer arrival.
WEAPON OFFENSE
June 17
8:50 p.m., Sperry Road, Newbury. People shooting in woods near caller’s house. Caller yelled over there to stop but they continued. They also have music blasting. Caller called back stating bullets are flying in the front yard. Deputies responded and spoke with complainant. Neighbors were talked to and it was found they had an inadequate backstop. Neighbors told to stop shooting until a proper backstop was constructed.
