Chardon boys golf was on the links at St. Denis Golf course Sept. 4 as they faced the Mayfield Wildcats in a WRC conference meet.
The Hilltoppers team won the match, 170-188.
So far this year, the Chardon boys have gotten off to a good start under Head Coach Dan McGuigan.
In the post-round interview, McGuigan talked about the match against Mayfield and how the season has progressed for the team.
“The boys played really well today,” McGuigan said. “Ty ( Roediger) and Sam (Sulka), our captain and co-captain, shot a 38 and 39. And the others, they held their own in order to get the score to the point where we were able to have a pretty good victory.”
Ty Roediger let the way, shooting a 38.
In 2022, he helped lead Hilltoppers golf to a great season and qualified for the OHSAA district tournament at Pine Hills as a freshman.
“The match was pretty good today,” he said after the round against Mayfield. “I was putting great. I felt pretty confident.”
Sulka shot a 39.
“I think the match went pretty well. We won by 18,” he said. “Me and Ty came together, both in the 30s. We were playing well. I was personally putting well. I felt overall I was playing well.”
Also contributing to Chardon’s victory were Ryan Grau, who shot a 46, and Henry Sweet, who carded a 47.
Although golf is an individual sport in which each golfer hits shots on their own, the importance of cohesion among teammates is important when participating in matches. Thus, coaches and team captains will spend time at the start of the season trying to help build cohesion and team chemistry amongst team members in order to determine what pairings seem to help the golfers perform most optimally in competition.
Since Chardon’s boys team is young, Sulka said its members have been work to build chemistry — which appears to be going well.
For instance, in discussing how the season has been progressing, Coach McGuigan said the team currently has a 4-1 record. McGuigan noted that a few matches have been rained out along the way, but Chardon is still planning to make them up.
Hilltoppers boys golf began the season Aug. 8 by finishing fourth at the Kenston Invitational at Punderson State Golf Course. Leading the team there were Ty Roediger (81), Sam Sulka (85), Stone Fawcett (88) and Ryan Grau (93).
The Hilltoppers’ first dual match of the season was Aug. 16 against Willoughby South. There, Chardon was led by Sam Sulka (42), Ty Roediger (43), Stone Fawcett (45) and Walter Sweet (45).
The team to beat this year in the Western Reserve Conference is Riverside, the coach says.
Chardon returns to the links Sept. 11 against Kenston at Punderson State Park Golf Course, then will host Kenston Sept. 13.
