The Hawken Hawks hosted the Orange Lions Oct. 6 in a Chagrin Valley Conference match-up.

The Hawks took an early 14-7 first-quarter lead behind the running of junior Jordan Johnson and the passing of sophomore Donovan Moorhead.

After a relatively close first quarter in which the two teams were separated by one score, the Hawks pulled away in the second quarter; they outscored the Lions 27-0 to claim a 47-13 victory.

Hawken Head Coach Mark Iammarino was happy with the way his team performed. In particular, he was proud of the resilience the Hawks showed as they bounced back from some adversity the past couple weeks.

“I’m just really proud of our guys,” Iammarino said. “First of all, it was such an electric setting right here. Our fans came out, the students, our youth football teams — it was really great.

“I’m proud of our guys, we lost two close ones, and they really came back to work this week and did a lot of good things. We were able to get up on a good, dangerous Orange team and then keep the foot to the gas pedal.”

The Hawks started the game quickly and continued playing fast, scoring six first-half touchdowns.

Hawken scored its first touchdown on the first of four touchdowns scored by Johnson, the Hawks’ running back.

The Hawks scored their second touchdown of the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Moorhead connected on a touchdown pass to senior captain Lucas Brandt to take a 14-0 lead.

After Orange added a first quarter touchdown to make the score 14-7, the Hawks then scored four second-quarter touchdowns.

In the second quarter, Moorhead threw two more touchdown passes, connecting with freshman wide receiver Charlie Mallett on both scores.

After the game, Moorhead and Mallett talked about the team’s performance.

“Our offense, we were just moving the ball at will,” Moorhead said. “Our line did great defensively and offensively, and our secondary just shut them down.”

Added Mallett, “Everything really fell in place in the first half. We came out aggressive, and that’s really what won us the game.”

In addition to the two second-quarter touchdown passes, Johnson scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter. One was a punt return for a touchdown.

After the game, Johnson talked about his four-touchdown game and his punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

“It was great to get back into the end zone today after two scoreless games back to back,” Johnson said. “I had good blocks (on the punt return). I have been working on receiving the punts in practice, so once I get it in to my hands (during the game), you just got to make something out of nothing.”

After both teams combined for seven touchdowns in the first half, both teams added a touchdown in the second half to make the final score 47-17.

For the game, the Hawks quarterback Moorhead was 12-16 for 162 yards and threw three touchdown passes.

On the ground, Hawken was led by Johnson (103 yards, 3 touchdowns), Paxon Laschinger (39 yards), Lucas Brandt (26 yards), Luke Mangini (22 yards) and Tristin Ruffin-Williams (20 yards).

The Hawks were led in receiving by Mallet (67 yards, 2 touchdowns), Johnson (48 yards), Brandt (25 yards, 1 touchdown), Mangini (17 yards) and Laschinger (6 yards).
