Chardon Sings

The Chardon Sings multi-choir student workshop held on Sept. 29 at Chardon high and middle schools hosted guest clinician Dr. Lisa Wong, director of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and associate professor of music at The College of Wooster. The outpouring of positive feedback and lessons learned from the 2022 workshop prompted Chardon Choir Director Fritz Streiff to plan this second installment for CHS and CMS choir students.

Chardon Crescendo Club – the district’s K-12 music boosters — generously sponsored this collaborative musical event just as it did last year.

Streiff stated, “The purpose of Chardon Sings Day is to provide an opportunity for the choir students to be vertically aligned and to grow from making music together. We are thankful for the support of Crescendo for making this enriching event possible.”

Bubble Run Success

Chardon Early Learning Center’s Tiny Toppers were bursting with smiles and laughter on Sept. 21 during the second annual Bubble Run school fundraiser. Students in both prekindergarten and kindergarten had the opportunity to enjoy the nice weather as they navigated the “bubble” course on the school’s campus for a block of time.

Memories were made while funds were raised to support CELC.

CELC principal Andrea Ryan stated, “Bubble Run 2023 was a huge success thanks to volunteers, families and staff. A special shoutout and thank you goes to the following companies that gave generously to help support our teachers, students and school in this event: Chardon Performance Therapy, Classic Chevrolet, The Hose Shack, King Kone, McKinney Development Enterprises, Inc., Pleasant Valley Woodworking, Polaris Engineering and Surveying, Spot-On Tent Rental and Yoder’s Counter Tops. Thank you also to professional photographer Jonathan Williams for donating his time and services to capture event photos.”

Community generosity also made enticing prizes possible to reward students raising the most funds. King Kone awarded 116 gift cards to students at $10 each – one for every $100 raised.

The fundraiser’s top seller was prekindergartner Elly Cogar, earning the grand prize of riding to school in style with her parents, Kyle and Cheyenne Cogar, via Chardon Fire Department’s ladder truck 3349 led by Chardon Fire Chief Justin Geiss. Students and staff gathered together at the school on the morning of Oct. 12 to cheer on Elly’s grand arrival.

AP School Honor Roll

Chardon High School earned a spot on the 2023 AP School Honor Roll with Silver Distinction. The College Board recognizes the high school’s outstanding work in welcoming more students into AP courses, delivering results and supporting students on the path to college success.

CHS offers 18 AP courses taught in 26 sections by 16 Chardon educators. Chardon Class of 2023 data reveals 57% (140 seniors) taking at least one AP exam during high school; 37% (90 seniors) scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam; and 10% (24 seniors) taking five or more AP exams. Sixty-five CHS students, both seniors and juniors, earned an AP Scholar Award from the College Board at the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year.

CHS principal Doug Murray stated, “It takes a significant school-wide effort — dedication from teachers, counselors, administrators, students and parents – to make AP access a priority. Special thanks to CHS guidance counselor Tim Hurlbut, who is our AP exam coordinator.”

National Merit Recognition

Chardon High School seniors Timothy Meleski and Thomas Wilkinson have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students. The students’ recognition in the National Merit program makes Chardon Schools proud and exemplifies the extraordinary commitment to high achievement.

Through this achievement, Timothy and Thomas are candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
