Kenston boys basketball couldn’t contain Aurora in the second quarter as the Bombers lost, 67-44, Dec. 22 at Aurora High School.

The score was tied at 10-10 after the first quarter, but the Greenmen dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Bombers 26-13, and never looked back. The big second quarter gave the Greenmen a 36-23 halftime advantage.

Aurora (3-4) built it’s lead up to 47-31 at the end of the third quarter before Kenston (0-6) showed a spark; Bombers Tymir Cardona (12 points) and Jackson Allotta hit back-to-back three-pointers, pulling their team within 47-37 early in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately, the Bombers never got any closer.

Kenston Head Coach Derrick DeJarnette said the Bombers had a hard time in the second quarter.

“They caught a rhythm and we couldn’t catch our breath,” DeJarnette said. “We need to work the ball more and be more patient. We have to run plays.”

The Bombers struggled offensively, with 27 turnovers and just 15 field goals. Aurora had just 12 turnovers.

“We were throwing the ball everywhere and not making crisp passes,” DeJarnette said.

One of Kenston’s bright spots was freshman point guard Allotta. He finished with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.

“He’s a great player,” DeJarnette said. “He plays hard and can really shoot the ball. He’s becoming a leader of the team.”

Allotta said he knew he shot the ball well, but there is still much for him and his teammates to work on this season.

“I think we need to calm down and relax,” Allotta said. “We did too much one-on-one. We can’t panic.

“I thought I shot well, but I need to get my turnovers down and play better on defense.”

First-year Aurora Head Coach Cody Calhoun was also impressed with Allotta.

“He’s good already, but he’s going to be really good,” Calhoun said. “He shoots with confidence. He’s just going to get better and better.”

Cooper Carnahan led the Greenmen with 15 points and eight rebounds. Aurora’s Joshua Harrell added 13 points with five rebounds, and Zachary Pannetti chipped in 11 points and three rebounds.

Aurora had a balanced score sheet, as nine different Greenmen scored.

“We had some good shots in the first quarter, but we had to settle in,” Calhoun said. “We got our confidence. We’re at our best when we keep the ball moving. We spread the scoring out. That’s a credit to the kids.”

Kenton’s Tommy Seifried had a game-high 10 rebounds.
