The West Geauga gymnastics team had a busy week, traveling to Lakewood Jan. 17, then hosting a Jan. 20 meet in Mentor at All Around Gymnastics.

The Wolverines finished in Lakewood as runners-up, and fourth place in Mentor.

West Geauga Gymnastics Head Coach Kasey Lotycz said the team got behind early Jan. 17.

However, the Wolverines stayed resilient and were able to move up the leaderboard throughout the event.

Coach Lotycz enjoyed watching her gymnasts show the ability to overcome the adversity they faced early on.

“Last meet, I really enjoyed watching the girls, the perseverance they had,” she said.

They finished strong because they switched their mindset to be more positive and confident, Coach Lotycz emphasized, even after not delivering the performances they’d hoped for earlier in the meet.

The coach was obviously also proud of her team’s performance Jan. 20.

“Overall, a fantastic meet,” Lotycz said.

Added senior Elana Rodriguez, “I think it went really well. It was one of our best meets. We really came through and pulled out some really great routines today, so I am really proud of us for that.”

In particular, Coach Lotycz was pleased with how her Wolverines performed on the beam and the vault. In fact, several of the Wolverines gymnasts stuck their vault, she said.

On the bars, the Wolverines have been working hard in practice to improve their cast angles, and practice had clearly led to improvement, she said.

West G finished up with a nice presence in the floor event.

“We had some big tumbling skills, and the goal today was to show off their routine,” Lotycz said.

The season as a whole as been great, Lotycz added.

“This is a new team for Tom Logar and I to be coaching,” she said. “Tom and I do a lot of goal setting with the team, and we just want to make sure that we put them (in position to be successful) and give them all the tools to be successful.”

At the close of the post-meet interview, Wolverines gymnasts said the support and positivity is appreciated. In unison, they pointed over to Lotycz and shouted, with big smiles on their faces, “Shout out to Kasey!”

“It was so sweet of her to take us and to start coaching us this season, so that’s great,” Rodriguez said.

Added sophomore gymnast Avery Love, “We have made a lot of improvements this year, so we’re glad and grateful.”

The Wolverines gymnasts next compete Jan. 27 when they participate in a meet hosted by Chardon at Cleveland’s Public Hall.
