A 9-year-old boy died as a result of injuries suffered during a two-vehicle crash Jan. 28 in Hambden Township.

Six others involved in the crash suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 1:28 p.m. Sunday on state Route 608, just south of the U.S. Route 6 intersection, Lt. L. P. Jones said in a press release.

Ryan Looman, 39, was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse southbound on Route 608 when he veered off the west side of the road. He then drove back onto the road and went left-of-center, crashing into a 2021 Kia Telluride being driven northbound by 44-year-old Kristen Goecke, Jones said.

All six people in the Chevrolet Traverse were transported to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, where the 9-year-old boy, Koby Looman, succumbed to his injuries. All were wearing seatbelts, Jones said.

Goecke’s Kia landed on the east side of the road following the crash. She was wearing a seatbelt and was also taken to UH Geauga Medical Center for her injuries, Jones said.

OSHP’s investigation is ongoing, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

State Route 608 was closed for several hours following the crash. Assisting on scene were the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office, Hambden Fire/EMS, Chardon Fire/EMS and the Leroy Township Fire Department.

A fundraiser has been created on gofundme for the Loomans.

“We have all been shaken by the news of the Looman family. If you know the Loomans, you know a family full of love, compassion and selflessness,” wrote fundraiser organizer Kimya Matthews. “As we all wrap our heads around the grief we are feeling, many have reached out to see how they can help. We are starting this page to assist by raising money for whatever expenses may come up in the weeks ahead that can help ease the weight of this nightmare, and to satisfy the incredible urge everyone has to feel useful in such difficult times.

“Please keep the Loomans in your thoughts and prayers, hug your loved ones and we will get through this as a community, supporting the Loomans as best we can,” she wrote.
