Nancy Jean Sugarman

Nancy Jean (nee Downes) Sugarman, age 87, of Auburn Township, peacefully passed away on Feb. 24, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Born June 9,1936, to Walter and Ruth (nee Nagel) Downes, in Buffalo, N.Y., Nancy married Louis F. Sugarman in 1958 in Hamburg, N.Y., making their life and home in Ohio in 1965.

Fondly remembered for her baking, especially her scones, Nancy delighted in spending countless hours baking cookies and hosting joyous tea parties with her grandchildren.

An avid seamstress, she poured her heart into crafting Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for her grandchildren, each stitch a testament to her love. She belonged to two quilting groups that donated to many various charitable causes.

Thanksgiving at Nancy’s was a cherished tradition, where family gatherings grew to over 40 members, echoing with laughter and gratitude. She was a true 1950s wife who doted over her husband, her love for him was unwavering.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Louis F. Sugarman, of Auburn Township; children, Christy (Mitch Stull) Sugarman, of Avon Lake, her heavenly blessing, Peter (Janice) Sugarman, of Bainbridge Township, Jolie (Steve) Chapman, of Newbury Township, and Barbara Sugarman, of Auburn Township; grandchildren, Emma (Jim) Peters, Calie (Anthony) Grey, Steven (Carol) Chapman, Christopher (Suzanne) Stull, Kyle (Nicole) Chapman, Molly Chapman, Louie Sugarman, Joe Sugarman, Catherine Lillibridge, Grace Lillibridge and Georgia Lillibridge; great-grandchildren, Amy Peters, Chase Grey, Hayden Grey, Graydon Peters and Naomi Chapman; sisters, Patsy Heitzhauss and Ruthie Downes; sister-in-law Daryl Martin; and loved by many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Downes; sister-in-law Barbara Burhans; and brothers-in-law, Bill Burhans and John Martin.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at the home of Peter and Janice Sugarman, 18395 Snyder Road, Bainbridge.
