Forrest W. Burt

The Honorable Forrest “Twig” Burt, age 78, passed away on Sept. 4, 2024, at Seidman Cancer Center.

He was born Dec. 6, 1945, in Chardon, to Laurence and Jeanette (nee Morton) Burt.

Forrest was a resident of Burton for most of his life. He graduated from Burton High School in 1963. He received a bachelor’s degree in education from The Ohio State University.

While teaching junior high history and social studies full time, he completed his law degree and graduated cum laude from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University.

Forrest was the Geauga County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney from 1980 to 1994 and was the legal advisor to various townships and school districts in the county. He also had a private family law practice during that time.

Judge Burt joined the bench in January of 1995 and served in the Court of Common Pleas of Geauga County for 24 years before retiring in 2018.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Jane (nee Zimmerman) Burt; son, Matthew (Colleen) Burt, of Columbus; daughter, Erin (John) Reuter, of Streetsboro; grandchildren, Hudson and Amelia Reuter; sisters, Sandy (Jim) Burzanko and Norma (Phil) Johnson; brother Charles (Carol) Burt; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Jeanette Burt; and brother David Burt.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, from 3-6 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Adam Hall Community Center, 11455 Washington St., Auburn Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Forrest’s name to The Burton Public Library, burtonpubliclibrary.org; or the American Cancer Society, donate.cancer.org.
