William Joseph Isner
William “Bill” Joseph Isner, age 84, of Kirtland, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Nov. 1, 2025, at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, Ohio.
Born on Oct. 2, 1941, in Buck Run, W. Va., to John and Ruby (nee Harris) Isner, Bill lived a life rooted in hard work, friendship and a deep appreciation for nature.
He dedicated 41 years to the Holden Arboretum as a horticulturalist, retiring in 2008. Bill took great pride in his work and was an avid gardener who found joy and peace among the flowers he tended. His love for horticulture was evident in the many unique species of irises he created—several of which remain on display at the Arboretum as a lasting tribute to his talent and passion.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Bill honorably served his country during the Vietnam era. His quiet strength, dedication and kind heart touched the lives of all who knew him.
He was especially grateful for the unwavering love and support of his family and friends throughout his illness.
Bill is survived by his sister, Patricia Steele, of West Virginia; nieces, Laura Isner and Natasha (Eric) Oakley, of South Carolina; great-nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Steve May, whose friendship meant the world to him.
He is preceded by his parents; and brothers, Paul Isner and Ray Glen Isner.
