A Chardon Township family has been temporarily displaced following a severe garage fire at their Auburn Road home the morning of Jan. 17.
“Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions extending through the roof of the attached garage with fire involvement into the residence,” Chardon Fire Chief Justin Geiss said in a statement. “Firefighters were advised that all occupants and pets had safely exited the home prior to arrival.”
Per multiple social media posts on Facebook from the Chardon Fire Department, Auburn Road was closed between Mentor Road and state Route 6 while crews responded to the fire.
The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist three residents and their four pets, Geiss said in his statement.
The Chardon Fire Department quickly got the blaze under control with assistance from the Munson, Hambden, Concord, Kirtland, Leroy, Chester and Mentor fire departments, he said.
The home sustained heavy damage to the garage, along with smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the structure, Geiss later said in a follow-up interview.
One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation but was not transported to a hospital, Geiss said in the social media post.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
