CSF Awards $12,800 In Grant Funding For District Programs
The Chardon Schools Foundation (CSF) has authorized over $12,800 in recent grants to benefit district educational programs and teachers serving students ranging from elementary through high school.
David Jevnikar, CSF president, says, “The Foundation is funded solely by contributions from local individuals and businesses. By providing funds to teachers and staff with innovative ideas, CSF hopes to ensure the highest quality education for students in the Chardon Schools. We’re asking for everyone’s support during this season of giving.”
CSF provides funds twice a year through its grant review process. Exciting projects receiving recent funding include:
One School, One Book funding awarded to Munson Elementary School: $1,840 to purchase 460 printed copies of a featured book for every student, teacher and staff member. Parents, children and staff will be engaged in reading the same book over a three to four-week period. This event is part of Munson’s Love to Read Week in January which seeks to create lifelong readers.
HotDots Reading Comprehension Program funding awarded to Carrie Maronde and Tammy Shreffler, teachers at Hambden Elementary School: $300 for the purchase of interactive, self-checking learning sets that allow students of all levels to practice reading comprehension skills through games and other activities.
iPad Learning Lab funding awarded to Jackie Brown and Pam Allen, teachers at Maple Elementary School: $6,499 for the purchase of iPads and a special storage/charging cart. In an ever-increasing technological world, students need to adapt to various devices and applications. The iPad Learning Lab will be used throughout the school and across all academic and special disciplines to enhance and ignite learning.
Academic Decathlon funding awarded to Allen Herner, high school teacher: $600 for entry fee for students competing in this academic-style competition. Academic Decathlon involves students with “A,” “B” and “C” GPAs to create a team of diverse knowledge sets. Chardon High School teams and individual students have placed highly in Academic Decathlon competitions every year since competing.
Author-in-Residence funding awarded to Joanne DeShetler, teacher for gifted elementary students throughout the district. Internationally known, local author Sandra Philipson will work with students through an authentic writing experience to create their own stories, which will be shared with parents and students’ schools.
BrainPop Website funding awarded to Tammy Carver, teacher at Park Elementary School. These animated, learning websites will be used to enrich, motivate and capture students’ attention and imagination across all levels. Teachers will be able to engage students in the areas of science, reading comprehension, language and vocabulary.
The Chardon Schools Foundation exists through the support of local donors. The community’s generous gifts keep CSF’s funding vibrant and responsive to the needs of the school district.
Contributions may be sent to P.O. Box 838, Chardon, OH 44024. Or make a donation online at the CSF website.
