All Star Band Flutist Selected

Chagrin Falls High School freshman flute player Abby Wagner was selected to participate in the Kent State University All Star Band weekend held Jan. 18 and 19 on the KSU campus. She was selected through a taped audition. She sent an audio file of her playing, demonstrating her tone, range and musicality. She played various scales as well as excerpts and a solo.

There were 100 high school students selected for the All Star Band from nominees from 37 high schools. Abby placed fourth out of the 16 flutes players who were selected. She has studied flute privately since fifth grade and outside of school, she also plays in a flute choir.

Visit To Museum Of Art

Sixth graders from the Chagrin Falls Intermediate School recently had the unique opportunity to spend the day at the world-renowned Cleveland Museum of Art. Visits began with a docent-led tour of students, teachers and chaperones where various galleries were highlighted and students visually analyzed specific works of art.

Students ventured out into the galleries with their teachers and parent chaperones in groups of six to become art detectives as they completed a scavenger hunt, which correlated with subjects studied in the sixth-grade curriculum. Art “came alive” for students as they read the museum map to find paintings, sculptures and artifacts in the American, European, African, Early Christian and Byzantium and Medieval galleries.

Prior to their trip, Kathleen Riley, Intermediate School art instructor, prepared students for their visits with a Power Point presentation. Students learned about the museum’s founders, a brief history of the museum, how to visually analyze a painting, the definitions of specific art vocabulary, the three systems that drive the arts patronage, education, and censorship and rules and manners while touring the galleries.

Upon their return to school, the students gathered once again in the auditorium to view a Power Point Scavenger Hunt Review, led by Ms. Riley.

CFMS QR Code Project

Chagrin Falls Middle School seventh-grade social studies students in Mr. Curtis Howell’s classes recently completed a QR code project on Ancient Roman landmarks. A QR code, also knows as a quick response code, is a printed code used to disburse audio/video information.

Upon completing a 3-D model of their chosen landmark, students created audio recordings to educate others on four key aspects of their landmark. With the help of Mrs. Lori Guerrini and Mrs. Amy Withrow, QR codes were printed and attached to the 3-D models.

The models were displayed in the library and the culmination of the project allowed students to scan a QR code with their smart device to take a visual and audio guided tour of Italy.
