“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” Teen Drama Project
Geauga Lyric Theater Guild is presenting its fourth annual teen drama project, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, directed by Angela Miloro-Hansen. Based on a true story, the incredibly powerful script follows the journey of a teen and young woman as they are imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp.
In conjunction with the play, a traveling exhibit titled From the Children, About the Children, For the Children-Art of the Holocaust will be on display. The exhibit is on loan from The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education through a grant from the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.
The cast and audience will have an opportunity to create a handmade butterfly as part of The Butterfly Project for the Holocaust Museum Houston. One and a half million handmade butterflies are being collected to represent the number of children who perished in the Holocaust. In addition, the cast members, along with volunteer groups and individuals, are working towards making a display of 15,000 butterflies to represent the 15,000 children that passed through Terezin, of which less than 100 survived.
Public performances are May 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and May 19 at 2 p.m. at Geauga Theater, 101 Water St. in Chardon.
The cast will be performing for local schools during the following week and will culminate the production in the Brickner Auditorium at Fairmount Temple at 7 p.m. on May 22. Betty Gold, a Holocaust survivor, will be a special guest at the Fairmount Temple and will answer questions from the stage after the performance. Fairmount Temple is located at 23737 Fairmount Road in Beachwood.
Public shows are $5, with reserved seats at Geauga Theater. General admission and tickets will be available at the door at Fairmount Temple.
