Fitness And Nutrition Experts Converge At Community Day
On April 14, the Kenston School District will host its second annual Play Blue in Motion event to engage the community in celebrating physical fitness and its positive impact on academic performance. The free event is open to the public and will be held from 1-4 p.m. at Kenston High School, 9500 Bainbridge Road in Bainbridge Township.
“Play” is an acronym for Promoting Learning through Active Youth.
Kimberly McCune Gibson, chef and local representative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, is serving as Play Blue honorary chair. New England Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko, who is from Romania, but grew up in Twinsburg, is the Play Blue keynote athlete and will be at the event to interact with kids and sign autographs.
In addition, attendees can enter to win raffle prizes, one of which includes a pitching lesson from former MLB pitcher Brian Anderson. The pitching lesson is part of a larger Cleveland Sports raffle prize featuring tickets and memorabilia, in addition to the pitching lesson. Another raffle prize is a gourmet dining experience featuring a five-course dinner for 12, cooked and served in the prizewinner’s home by Ms. McCune-Gibson.
McCune-Gibson grew up in Geauga County and is a partner in Hungry Bee, LLC, which offers personal chef services, catering, cooking classes, and event planning. In 2011, she and her business partner Ann Larrance created ReHive Ale, one of the first sustainable craft beers brewed by women and the first product released in McCune-Gibson’s “Beekeeper’s Daughter” food & beverage line.
Mesko participates in a number of New England Patriots Charitable Foundation community events, including the team’s “Celebrate Volunteerism” campaign. In the summer of 2012, Mesko launched The Zoltan Mesko Foundation, a nonprofit to provide financial support to organizations that foster the social, emotional, economic and physical well-being of children. In August 2012, Mesko was awarded with the Ron Burton Community Service Award, given to one Patriots player each year for his outstanding work in the community.
Throughout the Play Blue in Motion event, Kenston High School coaches and athletes will lead mini sports-clinics, and local fitness experts and business owners will conduct demos and workshops in martial arts, dance, yoga, spin classes and much more. With a focus on health and wellness, the event will also feature food vendors, cooking demonstrations, free samples from an A to Z salad bar and more.
The Play Blue initiative began when Kenston was awarded a $677,000 federal grant in October 2010 for physical education programming for the district’s 3,200 K-12 students. For more information, see KenstonLocal.org and click Play Blue.
