Cum Laude Society Inductions
Cum Laude is among the oldest academic honor organizations for high school students in the country. It was organized in 1906 by Dr. Abram W. Harris, director of the Tome School in Maryland. He believed that scholastic achievement of students in secondary schools should be accorded as much recognition as that given to other accomplishments.
He envisioned a society, modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, which would encourage and recognize true scholarship. During the society’s existence, there has been no deviation from the original objective of the founder namely the recognition of superior scholarship.
The keynote speaker for the induction event was Mark Nolan, well-known local TV-3 weather anchor.
Congratulations to the Chagrin Falls High School 2013 inductees: Claire Barcelo, Jack Campbell, Rachel Clemens, Shannon Fung, Celene Gielink, Katherine Girouard, Rebecca Hauserman, William Hinman, Meghan Judge, Katherine Kampf, Claire Kampman, Alex King, Dale Klose, Lauren Lang, Melanie Larson, Kathleen Mackin, Mairin Magnuson, Matthew Markley, Alyssa Marquette, Catherine McCormack, Anastasia Moran, Bradley Munday, Andrew Osgood, Caroline Rann, Annie Schiferl, Victoria Sevich, Adam Shoemaker, Matthew Simon, Derek Stevenson, Hannah Thombs, Jessica Walker, Abigail Weber, Kyle Weber and Anna Witkin.
School District Undergoes Crisis Response Training
On April 2, all employees of the Chagrin Falls School’s staff underwent training in the A.L.I.C.E. program designed to be an enhancement to the standard “lockdown” system used for emergency situations on a school campus. The focus of the program is on an alternative response to an “Active Shooter on Campus” emergency.
A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. The main objective of the program is to provide staff and students with options to increase their safety during a campus emergency.
The program uses a research-based protocol to provide options for surviving an active shooter event. Where the traditional lockdown response is passive in nature (lock doors, turn out lights, and wait for help), the A.L.I.C.E. program is considered a more pro-active approach. This program is being recognized across the country as an additional component to present emergency responses practiced by schools.
Chagrin Falls Assistant Principal Rob Winton is a certified A.L.I.C.E. instructor and led the day’s program for all staff. His presentation included videos, discussions and hands-on practice in safety techniques. All of the activities were assisted by local law enforcement officers.
The Chagrin Falls School District was approved by the Ohio Department of Education for an additional waiver day to conduct this training with all staff.
