Play Blue in Motion
On April 14, the Kenston School District hosted more than 1,000 attendees at its second annual Play Blue in Motion event, designed to engage the community in celebrating physical fitness and its positive impact on academic performance. “Play” is an acronym for Promoting Learning through Active Youth.
The event included an appearance by Play Blue honorary chair, chef Kimberly McCune Gibson, local representative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative. In addition, the Play Blue keynote athlete, New England Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko, made a presentation, signed autographs and held a kids punting clinic.
Throughout the Play Blue in Motion event, Kenston High School coaches and athletes and local fitness experts lead 20 mini sports-clinics, and the event included 60 health and wellness vendors, a Future Chefs cooking contest for kids sponsored by Sodexo, a Biggest Loser weight-loss challenge for Kenston staff and more.
The Play Blue initiative began when Kenston was awarded a $677,000 federal grant in October 2010 for physical education programming for the district’s 3,200 K-12 students. As a result, each of the Kenston school buildings now features a state-of-the-art, age-appropriate fitness room that is used by Kenston students during physical education class.
