Gurney Art Walk Scheduled
Gurney students in grades K-3 will be exhibiting their artwork during this year’s Gurney Art Walk 2013. All community members are invited to the opening reception on May 9 from 68 p.m. at Gurney Elementary School.
The reception will include music and demonstrations by local artists. The exhibit will run through May 22 and will be open to the public on weekdays from 3:458 p.m.
Gurney Staff Volunteers Time
Gurney staff members Jackie Gerber, Justin Cannon, Rachel Jones, Marianne Posatiere, Lisa Dugach, Sheri Halagan, Gloria Goshe, Cindy Hanculak, Mary Jo Czerr, JoAnn Mynchenberg, Janet Coriell, Justin Wise, Dale Tschappat and several of their spouses volunteered last Saturday for Gurney’s Adopt-A-Beach community service project.
The group collected 178 pounds of trash at Mentor Headlands. They not only collected trash, but also completed rather extensive forms that detailed the conditions of the lake, beach and surrounding areas. This information was later added to the Adopt-a-Beach online system used to educate the public, share with local health authorities and improve beaches.
Dale Tschappat registered the staff members with Alliance for the Great Lakes/ Adopt-A-Beach program, which is the Alliance’s premier volunteer program with some 10,000 participants.
Special Film Screening Held
A special screening of “Girl Rising” was recently held in the Chagrin Falls Performing Arts Center. The school’s Cum Laude Society in conjunction with the International Club sponsored the presentation. The film is directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins and features Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys and others.
“Girl Rising” tells the stories of nine remarkable girls from around the world, who are striving beyond circumstance, pushing past limits and demonstrating the extraordinary strength of the human spirit to overcome the odds. Yet, it also carries a powerful message: if we educate girls, we can change the future of some 66 million girls around the world who today only dream of going to school.
