Choir Presents Musical Creations
During a recent Chagrin Falls High School Classical Choral Concert, students performed three original pieces written by choir director Youssef Hamid. The choir had a unique experience as they participated in a “Composition Workshop” style rehearsal environment in the creation of this performance. The workshop allowed the choir members to play an integral part in the editing of Mr. Hamid’s musical creations.
The inspiration for his creation was poetry from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” He used “The Eagle’s Song,” “The Riddle of Strider” and “One Ring.” Mr. Hamid plans to submit the pieces to publishers in the near future.
Art Lecture, Demonstration
Mr. Dale Clifford, professor of foundation studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, recently worked with Mr. David King’s Chagrin Falls High School painting classes.
Professor Clifford is a master printmaker who currently depicts animals in linoleum relief block prints. He gave a lecture and demonstration about color theory, specifically warm and cool color using pastel chalks, to Mr. King’s students.
National Nutrition Month
Across the school district in March, the cafeterias celebrated National Nutrition Month. The Intermediate and Gurney School cafeterias transformed themselves into a “GO, SLOW, WHOA” zone.
The official theme for 2013 is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” which encourages personalized healthy eating styles. Foods in the cafeteria were labeled either “Go,” “Slow” or “Whoa” to make it easier for students to identify healthier options.
The theme recognizes that “WHOA” foods should be chosen infrequently while “GO” foods should be selected more often. Healthier choices are a reflection of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 recommendations and MyPlate messages.
The middle school’s Principal Advisory Committee developed “Rainbow Week” for its building’s theme. Different colored smoothies were offered four days out of the week. In addition, daily morning announcements contained facts on nutrients found in that day’s smoothie.
On Wednesday, students whose lunch included fruit and/or vegetables containing three out of five colors of the rainbow either off the “rainbow” salad bar or brought from home received a prize.
CFMS Minecraft Club
The middle school has established a Minecraft Club. The student led social gaming group will be given a chance to catch on and thrive. The goal of the group is to give students with an interest in the networking game of Minecraft an opportunity to get together and create and play in a world that they have designed.
It will be an alternative for those who prefer to socialize with the help of technology. Minecraft is a game that promotes creativity, planning and collaboration in a whole new way.
