National Merit Qualifiers
Nine Chagrin Falls High School students have been notified that they have met requirements to enter the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Juniors Peter Berlin, Tyler Bryant, Thomas Collins, Zach DeBernardo, Alexander Goebel, Karin Greenlaw, Maximilian Hallwachs, Eleanor O’Neil and Anna Weber all had a Selection Index score of 203 or higher on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Each of these students is among 50,000 highest-scoring participants of over 1.5 million program entrants. Of these 50,000 high scorers nationwide, about 16,000 will be named National Merit Program semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state, and approximately 34,000 others will be commended for their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Importance of Math Explained
Progressive Insurance representatives Tiffany Shay, Renee Demirci, Anmarie Basco and Karin Quick Tenebria, a 1999 Chagrin Falls High School graduate, recently visited Miss Anita Eberl’s intermediate school classes as part of the S.T.E.M. initiative (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics). They explained the idea behind insurance, the concept of high risk versus low risk and probability) and then demonstrated how they use math and graphing skills to see how it all affects insurance costs.
Then they introduced the board game, “Progressive Parkway, A Game of Risk and Reward,” as students were divided into groups. Once the students finished, the Progressive representatives charted their results on a classroom graph. They then interpreted the results and talked about trends and life events and how they can affect insurance costs. They also explained the importance of math in potential future careers.
@HeaderML:Booster Club Drive Begins
May is Booster Club Fund Drive Month. The Chagrin Falls Boosters Club was founded more than 60 years ago for the specific purpose of raising funds for the children. Over the years, the community’s donations have funded academic and athletic activities at all school levels.
As always, the club is counting on the community’s support this year. By joining now, members will be able to attend athletic contests at Chagrin Falls High School in the fall.
Being a Booster makes one part of Chagrin’s great tradition of supporting school children. The entire Booster board encourages all residents to contribute to this year’s fund drive.
