Thanksgiving Meals For Seniors

The Geauga County Department on Aging will offer a free traditional Thanksgiving day lunch and a light sandwich dinner to those Geauga County seniors, age 60 and older, who will be home and alone on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

There will be no regular Home Delivered Meals delivery or congregate meals on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day meals are available by preorder only and will be delivered from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If one is or knows a senior citizen that would like a Thanksgiving meal, call the department on aging at 440-279-2130, 440-564-7131, ext. 2130 or 440-834-1856, ext. 2130.

Volunteer Help Needed

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of volunteers from all over the county to help during the 2013 Geauga Fall Cleanup Days. The event kicks off Oct. 25 and runs through November, weather permitting.

Many seniors can no longer rake their yards, weed flowerbeds, clean up yard debris or wash windows. This is where volunteers can make a difference. By volunteering just a few hours of time, one can help a senior citizen remain independent and allow them to live in a safe, clean environment.

Volunteers will generally be assigned close to their homes to make the most of their volunteer time. Some volunteers, however, may choose another area in which they would like to work.

Individuals or groups who can help during the fall Clean-up Geauga Days are asked to contact the Department on Aging at 440-279-2130, 440-564-7131, ext. 2130, or 440-834-1856 ext. 2130 and ask for Bob Debevits, home maintenance coordinator, or Bill Phillips, volunteer coordinator, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Holiday Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are being sought to organize, pack and deliver meals during the upcoming holiday season. The Geauga County Department on Aging volunteers will deliver meals to seniors who are alone Thanksgiving and Christmas days.

Volunteers pick up one holiday meal per route, drive it to the seniors home and spend some time visiting.

Preparation and organization assistance begins at 10 a.m. and runs until noon, while drivers arrive at 11:15 a.m. to deliver the holiday meals. All meals are delivered from the Multi-Purpose Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon.

To register as a volunteer, call the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130, 440-834-1856 or 440-564-7131 ext. 2130 by Nov. 18 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 16 for Christmas.
