Heron Hiking

Backcountry Heron Hike is Nov. 2 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at The Rookery, 10110 Cedar Road in Munson Township.

Tucked back off trail at The Rookery, there’s a treetop colony that gives the park its name. The hike provides the annual chance to see one of the largest great blue heron rookeries in the county, accessible only during naturalist-led programs in the autumn while the herons winter down south.

According to historic accounts, this rookery has existed for at least 70 years in its present location. The backcountry hike includes a short introduction to the blue heron, acquainting participants with the species’ habitat and food using pictures and props, then a one and one-half to two-mile hike to visit the nesting site.

Registration is required.

Get An Eyeful

One can build a cosmic ray detector, or cloud chamber, using a jar, some rubbing alcohol, a bit of dry ice and some ingenuity.

Cosmic Ray Cloud Chamber will be held Nov. 7 and 21 from 7-8 p.m. at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St. in Montville Township.

Attend to try one’s hand at assembling a cloud chamber and using it to search for cosmic rays, and then receive a set of take-home instructions on how to assemble one’s own cloud chamber.

Registration is not required for the free program.
