Amish Store Robbed at Gunpoint
A West Farmington man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a Parkman Township Amish business at gunpoint last week.
William Jacob Hurd, 28, of 4809 Old State Road, has been charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. He was arraigned Friday in Chardon Municipal Court. Judge Terri Stupica set bond at 10 percent of $100,000 and scheduled Hurd’s preliminary hearing for 10 a.m. Nov. 2.
David Kurtz, owner of Kurtz Salvage Store at 16777 Shedd Road, called the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office at 2:18 p.m. Oct. 24 to report a man came into his store and pulled a gun on a female employee, Sheriff’s Lt. John Hiscox said.
The man, who was wearing a black/white hat and had red/orange facial hair, entered the store and brought some candy to the checkout counter, Hiscox said.
When the female cashier opened the register, the man flashed a small silver pistol and ordered the woman to hand over the money. She apparently froze, so the man grabbed approximately $200 out of the cash drawer and fled on foot, Hiscox said.
Earlier that day, an observant UPS driver making deliveries in the area noticed a suspicious vehicle and wrote down license plate, the lieutenant added. When the driver heard about the robbery about 30 minutes later, Hiscox said he called the sheriff’s office with the vehicle information, including the presence of a baby car seat in the back and two white males in the front.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies were advised and located Hurd in Warren, Hiscox said.
Authorities are still looking for the second man who, Hiscox said, is believed to be the driver of the getaway car. His name has not been released.
Geauga County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Scott Hildenbrand said heroin addiction might have been a motive in the robbery.
