Out On The Water

Whether it’s before dawn, during the day or beneath a full moon, your time on the water will be the best part of your day. Register by phone for any of these opportunities to join a Geauga Park District naturalist out on the beautiful Upper Cuyahoga River.

All activities take place at Eldon Russell Park, Horwath’s Landing.

Birding Biathlon: 50 Birds By Boat & Boot

May 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Observe International Migratory Bird Day by celebrating the return of migratory songbirds from the tropical Americas. Goal is 50 bird species seen or heard by canoe on the Upper Cuyahoga River at 11 a.m. and on foot at 1 p.m. in the park. Ages 10+ to canoe. Register if using park district canoe; bring your own and no registration required.

Polliwog Paddle Family Canoe

May 17, 3-4:30 p.m.

An easy-paced, short-distance float for families on the wildlife-rich Upper Cuyahoga River. Ages 5+ with adult.

Bridge Creek Canoe Expedition

May 23, 1-4 p.m.

Experienced canoeists take a rugged but rewarding three-hour canoe trip up Bridge Creek. Be prepared for muddy portages. Bring extra clothes in a waterproof bag and water. Register starting May 17.

Basic Learn to Kayak

June 7, 1-4 p.m.

Learn basic kayak-handling techniques for flat water. Ages 10+. Register starting June 1.

Intermediate Learn to Canoe

June 13, 9 a.m. to noon

Experienced paddlers learn intermediate canoe-handling techniques for flat water. Ages 10+. Previous paddling experience required. Register starting June 7.

Basic Learn to Canoe

June 13, 1-4 p.m.

Learn basic canoe techniques for flat water. Ages 10+. Register starting June 7.

Polliwog Paddle Family Canoe

June 14, 1-3 p.m.

An easy-paced, short-distance float for families. Ages 5+ with adult. Register starting June 7.

Cuyahoga Canoe

June 14, 4-6 p.m.

Join a naturalist on this adventure as we paddle our way, discovering plants and wildlife in and along the river. Ages 10+ with adult. Must be 12+ to paddle. Register starting June 7.

Cuyahoga Kayak

June 28, 1-4 p.m.

Take a naturalist-led adventure paddling to discover plants and wildlife in and along the river. Ages 12+ that are comfortable on the water. Use a park district kayak or bring your own. Register starting June 21.

Unless specified, programs are designed for those already comfortable with being out on the water; no lessons will be given.
