Backcountry Hike

Aug. 15, 9-11 a.m.

Swine Creek Reservation, Valley Shelter

Join a naturalist for an off-trail adventure along the abandoned B&O railroad bed above the valley of Swine Creek, a seldom-visited portion of this park.

Rugged terrain; must be physically capable of several miles of off-trail challenges. Registration required.

Kelso Afternoon Canoe

Aug. 16, 1:30-3 p.m.

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

Spend the afternoon floating on the cool waters of glacial Lake Kelso. Get a chance to see rare plant and animal life associated with this unique environ-ment.

Basic canoeing proficiency required. Ages 10 and older with an adult. Registration required by phone.

Kelso Katydid Kayak

Aug. 16, 7:30-9 p.m.

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

Enjoy a relaxing float on Lake Kelso and be serenaded by the insect orchestra as the sun sets.

Basic kayak experience required. Ages 12 and older with an adult. Registration required.

Hound Hike: Orchard Hills

Aug. 20, 7-8:30 p.m.

Orchard Hills Park, Lodge

Hike along these trails with your pooch. Bring dog towels, a water bowl, poop scoop and bags for dog cleanup. Dog must be kept on a leash no longer than eight feet. One dog per handler. Dogs must be non-aggressive to people and other dogs. Registration required.

Nature Break: Women’s Retreat

Aug. 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve

Every woman needs a break once in a while to recharge, relax in the sunshine and enjoy nature with other women. Let Geauga Park District provide the perfect opportunity this summer at Walter C. Best Preserve, Shelter, 11620 Ravenna Road in Munson Township.

The morning will begin with coffee and morning snacks. Retreat time includes kayaking (instruction and all equipment provided), yoga with certified instructor Cassandra Shofar of Luna Sidera Yoga & Wellness (bring a mat or beach towel) and other nature-related activities, including a flower ID walk and making notecards from pressed flowers.

Participants may also choose to spend time sitting near the lake and enjoying the view (binoculars provided).

Zeppe’s of Chardon will provide lunch. Dress in layers with comfortable clothes for being outside and for yoga, as well as change of clothes in case yours get wet while kayaking. Registration and a fee of $6 are required. Program is for females school age and up.
