Serpent Mound?

Robert McCullough Science Center

Who built Ohio’s Serpent Mound, and when? What caused the signs of an ancient explosion at the site? We’ll explore what archaeologists and geologists have been able to piece together, followed by night sky viewing if weather permits.

Meet the Artist: Jim Trombo

Meet photographer Jim Trombo and view his breathtaking collection of more than 40 nature photographs presented on canvas. Artwork on display through Oct. 19. Refreshments served.

Nature Break: Women’s Retreat

Aug. 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve

Take a break to relax in the park with kayaking, yoga and other nature-related activities. Bring a mat or beach towel for yoga and a change of clothes for after canoeing. Fee is $6. Registration required.

Nature Explorers: Bodacious Beasts

Aug. 22, 2-4 p.m.

The West Woods, Nature Center

Nature Explorers ages 6-7 and 8-11 are introduced to extinct Ice Age animals. Meet Harry, the woolly mammoth puppet; play wolf and musk-ox games; investigate a simulated mammoth excavation; and receive a miniature mammoth to keep. Drop-off program. Registration required.

Nights Out in the Parks

Enjoy an evening of Irish acoustic rock with The Craic Brothers. Held indoors if inclement weather. Refreshments served. CONNECT.

Polliwog Paddle Family Canoe

Eldon Russell Park

An easy-paced, short-distance float on the wildlife-rich Upper Cuyahoga River for families. Ages 5 and older with an adult. Registration required by phone.

Sky Tonight Planetarium Show

Aug. 23, 2-3 p.m.

Observatory Park,

Robert McCullough Science Center

Join for a planetarium presentation about what to watch in the night sky during the week. Building open house is from 1-4 p.m. View the sun using the park’s safe solar-viewing equipment.

Geauga Walkers

Aug. 25, 1-2:30 p.m.

Big Creek Park, Aspen Grove Shelter

Join other active seniors on weekly hikes typically one and one-half miles long. A naturalist leads hikes held in park district parks. Call Geauga Senior Center for schedule, 440-279-2137.

Prairie Prowl

Frohring Meadows

After several years getting established, Frohring Meadows’ prairie is ablaze with color. Discover the diversity of prairie species with botanist Judy Bradt-Barnhart. Joint program with Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio.

Maple Town Tune Traders

Aug. 27, 7-10 p.m.

The West Woods, Nature Center

Come to play, sing or just to listen and enjoy. Informal performances followed by jam session. All musical genres and instruments, as well as snacks to share, welcome.

Geocaching in Geauga Parks

Aug. 29, 10 a.m. to noon

Big Creek Park, Donald W. Meyer Center

After an introductory presentation on the activity, members of the local Northeast Ohio Geocachers will help participants learn to use their own handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) or several park district-owned devices available to borrow during the program. Participants will then search for a couple temporary caches or an official multicache in place at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road, Chardon Township.

Registration is not required. All caches are off trail.

Geauga Park District also places seasonal caches in its parks, most lasting the duration of the year. Visit http://bit.ly/gpdgeocache for those clues and coordinates.
