Students Collect Supplies for WomenSafe

Two Auburn Career Center Teaching Professions Pathway students are making a big difference and a positive impact in their community. Sidney Cala and Christina Pemberton, both of Cardinal High School, are participating in a FCCLA Advocacy project they call “Operation Donation.”

FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization that provides personal growth, leadership development and career preparation opportunities for students in family and consumer sciences education. Their project focuses on going out into the community and improving it by giving back.

Cala and Pemberton took to social media and reached out to the community to collect donations for WomenSafe in Chardon. They primarily networked through Facebook, Instagram, Auburn students and their families as well as their community. Through this networking, they collected over 220 items, including toys, household cleaners, clothes and books for WomenSafe.

WomenSafe provides emergency shelter and resources to survivors of domestic violence throughout Northeast Ohio.

“Doing this project, it brings a different feeling of joy, one that you don’t get from getting a gift, but by giving back,” said Cala.

The event was so successful they decided to do a collection for Lake County.

“We don’t just want to better our community. We want to better our neighboring communities also,” said Pemberton.

Cala and Pemberton decided to do a school supply drive for students in Painesville City. They are collecting basic school supplies such as book bags, scissors, glue sticks, crayons, Kleenex, pencils, pink erasers, notebook filler paper, post it notes, index cards, colored pencils, baby wipes, spiral notebooks, highlighters, pocket folders (yellow, blue, green and red), pencil pouches, 1 1/2-inch binders (black and white), quart Ziploc bags and dry erase markers.

“We hope to spread the feeling of giving back, a small donation is a great start for a student’s education,” said Cala.

They are collecting school supplies through March 24. Anyone interested in donating can contact Teaching Professions Pathway instructor Jane Metrisin at jmetrisin@auburncc.org or call 440-357-7542.
