State Science Fair Bound

Both eighth-grader Kaylie Malloy and seventh-grade student Ellie Faber placed superior in the regional science fair competition, qualifying them to move on to compete at The Ohio State University State Science Fair in Columbus. In addition, Ellie was one of eight girls chosen to receive a scholarship to the B-Wiser Institute from the College of Wooster’s Department of Chemistry. Ellie’s project investigates the UV radiation levels in light bulbs.

She said, “My project is helping to show which is the safest and smallest level of radiation in light bulbs.”

Ellie was not the only student to receive and additional award. Eighth-grader Kaylie Malloy’s project received not only a superior placement, but also a monetary award from the Northeast Section of the Ohio Water Environment Association for her research into the effects microbeads can have on our water systems.

St. Mary School was also represented by Ben McIlroy and Mary McCauley who received excellent ratings.

St. Mary School continues a rich tradition of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic) education with these placements. This year, the school was recognized as one of few in the state to be a Thomas Edison STEM Award Winning School.

Each year, State Science Day brings over 1,000 of the best and brightest student scientists in Ohio to The Ohio State University to compete for close to 100 sponsored scholarships and awards. Good luck to Ellie and Kaylie.
