Young Professional Leaders Meet

July 14, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

United Way Services of Geauga County announces the formation of a Young Professional Leaders group that will consist of 21-39 year olds that live and/or work in Geauga County. There will be networking events, speakers and volunteering/engagement opportunities within the community.

A networking and informational session will be held at Sharon James Cellars, 11303 Kinsman Road, Newbury.

Divine Word Rummage Sale

July 14-16

Divine Word Church is holding a rummage sale at 8100 Eagle Road in Kirtland. Sale takes place July 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and July 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Early birds welcome July 13 from 6-8 p.m. for a $25 donation purchased in advance from the parish office, 440-256-1412. CV Herb Society Meets

July 15, 12:30 p.m.

Chagrin Valley Herb Society will meet at the Bainbridge Library for refreshments, business meeting and a presentation by Launie McDivitt, who will present “Two to Tangle.” Learn how to make Zentangle garden markers, unique artistic plant labels on stones from Lake Erie.

Free Breakfast

July 16, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The men of Ledgewood Christian Church are hosting their free monthly community breakfast at the church located at 8261 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice, milk and coffee. Ample parking is available in front and in the rear of the church building. All are welcome.

Memorial Poker Run

July 16

Registration for the seventh annual Shawn Wilkes Memorial Poker Run begins at 10:30 a.m. at Hickory Lake Tavern, 14592 Stone Road in Newbury. All vehicles welcome. Kickstands up at noon; all back by 5 p.m.

Dinner served from 4-7 p.m. Event includes music, Chinese auction and door prizes. Cost is $25 per couple or $15 per single. All proceeds benefit the Shawn Wilkes Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund.

All participants are required to sign a release prior to leaving on the run.

Apothecary Grand Opening

July 17, 12-4 p.m.

The Geauga County Historical Society will hold a grand opening of the newly renovated and staged Apothecary Building on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton. The building focuses on the medical arts of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Admission to the event is free; donations will be gratefully accepted. Guided tours will be available.

Claridon Community Dinner

July 19, 5-6:30 p.m.

Sloppy Joes are on the menu for this month’s dinner, held at the Claridon Township park located next to the Claridon Town Hall. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy strawberry shortcake while listening to The Great Geauga County Fairband beginning at 7 p.m.

Dinner is sponsored by Claridon Community Helps while the concert is hosted by First Congregational Church of Claridon. All donations collected will be given to the church.

Newbury Concert in the Park

July 19, 7 p.m.

The Gertsburg Law Firm presents its first annual Concert in the Park at Oberland Park, 14639 Auburn Road in Newbury Township. Sponsored by Geauga Growth Partnership and the Newbury Township trustees, the free evening features the No Moss Band. Bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets.

DTJ Chicken and Duck Dinner

July 24, 12-2 p.m.

DTJ Taborville is hosting a chicken and duck dinner at 9850 North Blvd. in Auburn Township. Cost is $12.50 for an adult dinner and $6.50 for a children’s chicken dinner. A half duck dinner is $17.50. Dinner includes dumplings, sauerkraut, homemade donut and coffee.

Czech beers are available at the bar. Frank Moravcik will provide music from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Protect Geauga Parks

July 24, 2-3 p.m.

Take a walk in the woods at Orchard Hills Parks with Protect Geauga Parks, led by renowned hike leader Katherine Malmquist. The hike will be at a leisurely pace, with Malmquist sharing tidbits about wildflowers, birds and interesting facts about the history and reclamation of Orchard Hills Park, a conservation success story in progress.

Chardon Kiwanis Food Drive

July 29, 7-9 p.m.

The Chardon Kiwanis Club will be accepting donations during the Concert in the Park on Chardon Square. Donations can be brought to the donation table and may include nonperishable food items, toiletries and cash. All donations will be given to the food pantry at the Pilgrim Christian Church.

People are encouraged to come out to enjoy rock ‘n’ roll performed by the 730 Club.

Kelly Miller Circus

July 30, 2 and 5 p.m.

The Kiwanis Club of West Geauga welcomes the Kelly Miller Circus to the West Geauga High School grounds, 13401 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township.

The public is welcome to come watch the Big Top go up at 8:30 a.m. The all new 2016 season will feature an elephant and a variety of mixed animals along with a host of international circus stars.

Tickets are on sale at Discount Drug Mart in Chester Township and Chagrin Falls. Advance sale tickets are $12 per adult and $6 per child. At the gate, tickets are $16 and $8, respectively. Tickets are also available online at www.kellymillercircus.com. Special ringside seating is available at the box office on circus day for an additional $2 per seat.

Cardinal Grand Reunion

July 30, 6-10:30 p.m.

The Cardinal Alumni Association will celebrate its second annual grand reunion at Huntsburg Community Hall, 12406 Madison Road. Cost for CAA members is $25; alumni from the class of 1969 and earlier, $30 and nonmembers/guests, $35. BYOB.

Next Step Reverse Raffle

July 30, 7 p.m.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Geauga announce the return of the Next Step Reverse Raffle, an annual event organized in support of Next Step, which is a program that offers housing and guidance to at risk youth from age 18 to 24.

The raffle will be held at the Sales Barn Auctions, 15848 Nauvoo Road, Middlefield. There will be a full cash bar, food and game boards. The evening ends with a reverse raffle and a grand prize of $3,000. There are only 200 tickets being sold.

Food Pantry Open

The Chesterland Food Pantry at Christ Presbyterian Church, 12419 Chillicothe Road, provides, food to low-income families and individuals who are Geauga County residents. The pantry hours are: Monday, 6:30-8 p.m.; Tuesday, 9:30-11 a.m.; Wednesday, 1-2:30 p.m.; and Thursdays, from 10-11:30 a.m. ID is required for each member of the family.

WG Soccer Club Camp

Aug. 1-5, 6-8 p.m.

West Geauga Soccer Club Summer Skills Camp will be held at West Geauga Commons. Cost is $99 for registration by July 15 and $109 after.

Camp will focus on foot skills, passing, shooting and first touch. Tactics and skills will be taught through games. T-shirt included for all campers Coaches are Bill Bryan and Kori Chapic.

GCRTA Annual Picnic

Aug. 2, 11 a.m.

The Geauga County Retired Teachers’ Association will hold its annual picnic at Munson Township Park, 12641 Bass Lake Road. Gathering time will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the business meeting at 11:30 a.m., and potluck lunch at noon.

After the meal, the grant-in-aid recipients will be introduced and presented with their awards. Bring a dessert to enter in the dessert contest to win a prize of $25. Other activities include entertainment by Danny and Frank from the Usual Suspect Band, introductions of new GCRTA members, 50/50 raffle and free lunch raffle.

Please bring a dish for eight to share and a place setting. Nancy Speck’s pulled pork sandwiches and beverages will be provided.

SNJP Hosts Polka Star Salute

Aug. 7

Celebrate the music of the late polka legend Eddie “Hambone” Habat, one of the Cleveland-Style Polka’s top accordionists and bandleaders, as the Jeff Pecon Orchestra performs at SNPJ Farm, 10946 Heath Road in Kirtland.

Father Frank Perkovich arrives from Minnesota to start the day with his popular polka Mass at 1 p.m. The orchestra will then play from 3-7 p.m. and features three-time Grammy-winner accordionist Walter Ostanek and Polka Hall of Famer accordionist Fred Kuhar. Drummer Mark Habat, Eddie’s son, joins the fun.

Enjoy home-style dinners and sandwiches and refreshments. Admission is $8 for the dance and polka Mass. Youth 18 and under are free.

Parade Participants Needed

Aug. 14

Parade participants are needed for the 82nd annual Harvest Festival Parade held at DTJ Taborville in Auburn Township. Wanted are cars, tractors, bands, drummers, horses and more.

The parade lines up at 1 p.m. and steps off at 2 p.m. Festivities begin at 11 a.m.

Kids Kickers Soccer

Wednesdays, Aug. 17 – Sept. 28

West Geauga Soccer Club will hold its Kid Kickers program for girls and boys ages 4-8 on eight consecutive Wednesdays. The one-hour sessions will consist of skills and games at Clay Eddy Fields. The final session will be a tournament for each age group on the high school stadium turf field on Oct. 2. Coaches are Brian Murphy and Brady Dean.

Vendors Sought for Arts Fair

The Auburn Firedevils, auxiliary to the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, is holding an arts, crafts and consultants fair at Adam Hall, 11455 E. Washington St. in Auburn Township.

The group is currently looking for vendors to sell at the event. Tables are $25 each. Tables and chairs are provided. There is ample parking.
