GEL Breakfast
Sept. 9, 8-10 a.m.

Kent State University at Geauga and Geauga Growth Partnership will co-present “Substance Abuse: Rehab. Recover. Re-Entry” at the next Geauga Economic Leadership (GEL) Breakfast taking place at Kent State University at Geauga, 14111 Claridon Troy Road in Burton.

Join for a panel presentation about substance abuse and addiction.

Breakfast and networking begin at 7:30 a.m. Free and open to the public.

Safety Council Meets
Sept. 9, 11:15 a.m.

Geauga Safety Council will meet at Punderson Manor in Newbury Township. Joy Black will speak on employer responsibility to employees with mental health issues.

This ‘N’ That Garage Sale
Sept. 9-10

The St. Mark Lutheran Women’s League is holding its 13th annual This ‘n’ That community garage sale at the church located at 11900 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township.

Hours are Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Free Fresh Produce
Sept. 10, 9-11 a.m.

Newbury United Community Church, 14961 Auburn Road, will be hosting a fresh produce giveaway.

Cleveland FoodBank provides the service to low income Geauga County residents. Please bring ID and bags.

Distributions will continue the second Saturday of the month through November.

Farmers’ Market Breakfast
Sept. 10

The Geauga Fresh Farmers’ Market will feature breakfast from Carhop’s Burger Sauce of Willowick Mobile Diner at the Geauga Fresh Farmers’ Market.

The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon until October in the South Russell Village parking lot at Chillicothe and Bell roads.

St. Patrick Church Chinese Auction
Sept. 10

St. Patrick Church, 16550 Rock Creek Road in Thompson, will hold a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. Doors open at 11 am. Drawing begins at 2 pm.

Light lunch available. There are gifts and prizes for all ages. The $2 admission includes six auction tickets.

Poor Man’s Raffle
Sept. 10, 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The Chesterland Lions will host their annual Poor Man’s Raffle at the SNPJ Hall, 10946 Heath Road, Kirtland.

Tickets are $60 per couple or $40 for a single and include one number for the $500 grand prize drawing.

Homemade dinner of pork, beef and sides included in ticket price along with beer, wine and soft drinks.

Auburn FD Clam Bake
Sept. 10, 6-8:30 p.m.

The Auburn Fire Department is hosting its annual clambake. Regular bake dinner costs $28 and includes a dozen clams, half a chicken, corn, yams, coleslaw, roll and beverages. Extra clams will be available for $10 per dozen, as well as hot dogs and chips for the kids.

There will also be entertainment and a 50/50 raffle to benefit the fire department. The Auburn Firedevils will have cookbooks available.

Geauga Bowmen Archery
Sept. 10-11

Deer Shoot is Saturday, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Corn Roast is Sunday, with registration from 8 a.m. to noon, at Geauga Bowmen Archery, 12525 Sperry Road, Chester Township.

All shoots are open to the public, with equipment available. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for cubs.

Kiwanis Corn Roast

The Kiwanis Club of Chardon is hosting the eighth annual Corn Roast on Chardon Square. The event features entertainment, a silent auction and corn from Sage’s Apples.

All proceeds raised will go to support scholarships and other charitable programs offered by the club.

Opiate and Heroin Crisis Examined
Sept. 12, 6:30 p.m.

Terri McIntee, candidate for District 76 state representative, will facilitate the Let’s Talk Series topic: “Epidemic: The Opiate and Heroin Crisis” at the Middlefield Public Library, 16167 East High St.

Panel members Judge Terri Stupica, member of Lake/Geauga Opiate Task Force; Craig Swenson, Geauga Jobs and Family Services; Matt Peterson, Lake/Geauga Recovery Center; and Ron Wiech, Middlefield councilman and candidate for county commissioner, will share their expertise on this out of control epidemic and share their perspective of the impact within their own organizations, as well as the short-term and long-term impact on families, relatives and neighborhoods.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m.

Fall Fishing Derby

Munson Township’s fall community Fishing Derby is open to all Munson Township residents at the Scenic River Retreat, 10900 Mayfield Road.

Bring a fishing pole; catch and release only. Bait will be provided. Door prizes awarded.

Geauga Co. Airport Day
Sept. 17, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Spend the day at the Geauga County Airport, 15421 Old State Road, Middlefield. An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served from 7-11 a.m. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for youth 3-11.

Free Young Eagle airplane rides will be offered to first time flyers ages 8-17 from 8-11 a.m. Parental permission is required.

Welcoming ceremony is at noon. Enjoy displays and demonstrations all day.

Admission and parking are free. Bring lawn chairs. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m.

Bird Conservation Near And Far
Sept. 20, 7 p.m.

Conservation around the world will be the topic of Blackbrook Audubon’s program at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland.

Stan Searles will give an overview of some successful avian conservation programs, areas of current concern and ongoing projects designed to help endangered species.

Searles was a bird curator at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a general curator at SeaWorld and founded Global Conservation Connections.

The program is open to all.

Fall Fish Sale
Sept. 22

The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual fall fish sale will be held on the midway at the Geauga County Fairgrounds.

Orders are currently being taken for fingerling-size largemouth bass, redear “shellcracker” sunfish, yellow perch, bluegill/sunfish mix, channel catfish, white amurs and fathead minnows.

Order deadline is Sept. 15. Order forms are available by visiting www.geaugaswcd.com or calling 440-834-1122.

To guarantee orders, complete an order form and send with payment to Geauga SWCD, PO Box 410, Burton, OH 44021. Make checks payable to Geauga SWCD or contact the office to pay by credit card.

Free Community Meal
Sept. 24, noon

East Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 10848 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland, offers free community meals at noon on the fourth Saturday of every month. September’s lunch features baked potato skin, bacon and cheddar soup followed by brat sandwiches, sides and dessert.

HomeGrown Geauga

Tickets are now on sale for Geauga Growth Partnership’s fourth annual HomeGrown Geauga fundraising event at the Federated Family Life Center, 16349 Chillicothe Road, Bainbridge Township.

The evening features fine food by signature chefs, open bar, entertainment, music by the Don Disantis Band, a farmers market and takeaways.

Leaves of Change Luncheon

Hamlet Village Retirement Community and Friends of WomenSafe are partnering to host a fall luncheon, “Leaves of Change,” at the Hamlet Atrium, 200 Hamlet Hills Drive, Chagrin Falls.

Enjoy wine and buy raffle tickets for gift certificates, jewelry and specialty baskets. Lunch will be served at noon, followed with a brief talk by Andrea Gutka, executive director of WomenSafe, who will give advice on how to help friends and/or relatives who may be in abusive relationships. Event also includes a medley of Broadway show tunes.

Vendors Needed For Craft Fair

Burton Health Care Center, 14095 E. Center St., is holding a craft and vendor fair Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is looking for vendors for the event. Cost of a table is $20.
