Patriotic Quilt Contest

To commemorate the Wall That Heals event at the 2016 Great Geauga County Fair, the domestic arts department has created a new section to show Geauga County’s appreciation and pay tribute to local veterans. Enter one patriotic quilt project in any of the nine classes offered. One entry per class deadline for fair entry is Aug. 10.

Any project entered will be judged then displayed during the fair. At the end of the fair, all entries will be turned over to the Geauga County Veterans’ Services to be presented to county veterans at a special ceremony at “The Wall That Heals” event.

Chardon Kiwanis Food Drive

July 29, 7-9 p.m.

The Chardon Kiwanis Club will be accepting donations during the Concert in the Park on Chardon Square. Donations can be brought to the donation table and may include nonperishable food items, toiletries and cash. All donations will be given to the food pantry at the Pilgrim Christian Church.

People are encouraged to come out to enjoy rock ‘n’ roll performed by the 730 Club.

Gates Mills Garden Club

July 29-30

The Gates Mill Garden Club is hosting “Primary Colors? flower show at Gates Mills Garden Club Esquire’s Cottage, 1280 Chagrin River Road. Hours are Friday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the show features more than 40 design exhibits and 60 different horticulture classes as well as educational, youth and photography exhibits.

Antique Power and Steam Show

July 29-31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Historical Engine Society will be holding its 46th Annual Antique Power and Steam Exhibition at the Geauga County Historical Society’s Century Village Museum in Burton.

The show features a large display of gas and steam engines, excavating equipment, antique cars and trucks, grain threshing machines, tractor pull, sawmilling and blacksmithing.

There will also be a parade of machinery through downtown Burton Saturday and Sunday morning, children’s rides on Murphy’s Railroad and open house tours of Century Village’s restored homes and shops.

Friday is a preview and setup day with reduced admission. Admission is $2 Friday and $6 Saturday and Sunday for adults, $3 for children 6-12 and free for children under 6.

Scrap Tire Collection

July 30, 8 a.m. to noon

Troy Township will host its eighth annual scrap tire collection event in the parking lot behind the Troy Community House, 13950 Main Market Road. Bring identification to verify Troy Township residency; IDs will be checked.

Passenger vehicle and small truck/SUV tires only. No semi or tractor tires accepted. A maximum of eight tires per household will be accepted. Tires must be off rims.

The event is made possible through a grant received from the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste Management District. For more information, call the township at 440-834-8614.

Kelly Miller Circus

July 30, 2 and 5 p.m.

The Kiwanis Club of West Geauga welcomes the Kelly Miller Circus to the West Geauga High School grounds, 13401 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township. The public is welcome to come watch the Big Top go up at 8:30 a.m.

Tickets are on sale at Discount Drug Mart in Chester Township and Chagrin Falls. Advance sale tickets are $12 per adult and $6 per child. At the gate, tickets are $16 and $8, respectively. Tickets are also available online at www.kellymillercircus.com. Special ringside seating is available at the box office on circus day for an additional $2 per seat.

Next Step Reverse Raffle

July 30, 7 p.m.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Geauga announce the return of the Next Step Reverse Raffle, an annual event organized in support of Next Step, which is a program that offers housing and guidance to at risk youth from age 18 to 24.

The raffle will be held at the Sales Barn Auctions, 15848 Nauvoo Road, Middlefield. There will be a full cash bar, food and game boards. The evening ends with a reverse raffle and a grand prize of $3,000. There are only 200 tickets being sold.

Food Pantry Open

The Chesterland Food Pantry at Christ Presbyterian Church, 12419 Chillicothe Road, provides, food to low-income families and individuals who are Geauga County residents. The pantry hours are: Monday, 6:30-8 p.m.; Tuesday, 9:30-11 a.m.; Wednesday, 1-2:30 p.m.; and Thursdays, from 10-11:30 a.m. ID is required for each member of the family.

Concert in the Park

Aug. 3, 7-9 p.m.

Deutscher Musik Verein will be performing at the bandstand in Chester Township Parkside Park.

The 30-piece costumed German concert band plays a variety of German and other European music. The band has performed extensively at festivals throughout the area as well as European tours and the Munich Hofbrauhaus.

Presented by the West Geauga Kiwanis Club in conjunction with the Chester Township Park Commission.

In event of rain, concert will be moved to Mayfield United Methodist Church, 7747 Mayfield Road, Chester Township.

Auburn CC Rummage Sale

Aug. 4-6

Auburn Community Church, 11076 E. Washington St., will host a rummage sale. Hours are Aug. 4, 5-9 p.m.; Aug. 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday is $2 standard grocery bag sale. Larger items are 80 percent off. Sale includes vintage toys and wood children’s tables and chairs, two antique parlor tables, jewelry, clothes, household items, linens, barstools and more.

Geauga Safety Council

Geauga Safety Council will meet at Punderson Manor House in Newbury. Doug Newman, from CompManagement, will speak on slips, trips and falls how they lead to OSHA’s top workplace injuries. Cost is $20, or $25 for nonmembers. Preregistration is required by emailing safety@middlefieldcc.com.

Prescription Drug Prices Examined

Terri McIntee, candidate for District 76 state representative, will facilitate the Let’s Talk Series topic: “Why Are Prescription Drug Prices so High?” at West Geauga Library, 13455 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township. Dr. Mark Rood, founder of South Russell Family Practice and a leader in the healthcare community in Northeast Ohio, will be the presenter.

Community Picnic

Aug. 13, 4-6:30 p.m.

Auburn Community Church will host a community picnic at Adam Hall in Auburn Township. Hamburgers, a variety of side dishes and beverages will be the menu. A raffle will be held to benefit the school children of Geauga County.

Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children three and under. All members and friends of the church are invited to attend.

Veterans Olde Fashion Picnic

Join to honor and celebrate veterans at the Veterans Olde Fashion Picnic held indoors at St. Helen Church, 12060 Kinsman Road in Newbury.

Parade participants are needed for the 82nd annual Harvest Festival Parade held at DTJ Taborville in Auburn Township. Wanted are cars, tractors, bands, drummers, horses and more. Golfing For Kids

Aug. 15, noon

Golfing for Kids, an 18-hole scramble, dinner and auction event hosted by Friends of CASA For Kids of Geauga County, will take place at Barrington Golf Club in Aurora with a 12 p.m. shotgun start.

By visiting the event website, friendsofcasa.org/golfingforkids, the public can purchase various levels of sponsorships, an individual golfer registration and guest dinner tickets. All sponsorships are tax deductible and benefit local abused and neglected children in need.

Barbecue Chicken Dinner

Newbury American Legion and Auxiliary Post 663 is hosting a barbecue chicken dinner in the Hunter Pavilion behind the Post located at 11008 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 advance sale.

Fall Fish Sale

Sept. 22

The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual fall fish sale will be held on the midway at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. Orders are currently being taken for fingerling-size largemouth bass, redear “shellcracker” sunfish, yellow perch, bluegill/sunfish mix, channel catfish, white amurs and fathead minnows.
