Chardon UMC Rummage Sale

Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St. in Chardon, is holding a rummage sale Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s 2015 mission trip to Guatemala through Orphan Resources International.

DTJ Chicken and Duck Dinner

DTJ Taborville is serving a chicken and duck dinner on Oct. 5 from 12-2 p.m. Cost is $12 for an adult dinner and $6 for a children’s chicken dinner. A half duck dinner is $17. Dinner includes dumplings, sauerkraut, homemade doughnut and coffee. Music for dancing will be provided by the John Anthony Squeeze Play from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Czech beer is available at the bar.Reservations are required by calling 440-543-8494 by Oct. 3. Genealogy Society Meets

Cindy Cesen will present “Comedy & Tragedy: The Life of Montville Resident J. Duke Jaxone” at the Oct. 14 meeting of the Geauga County Genealogical Society. Donations For Dogs

The Geauga County Dog Warden is in desperate need for canned food and rawhides. For more information, stop by the Geauga County Dog Warden at 12513 Merritt Road in Chardon or call 440-286-8135. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tri-County Coin Club

The Tri-County Coin Club will meet Oct. 9 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 11519 Wilson Mills Road in Chardon. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 7:15 p.m. and a 50-plus-lot coin auction, door prizes, coin displays, raffle and 50/50 drawing.

Candidates Nights

The Geauga County Tea Party will sponsor two candidates nights. Both will be held at 6:30 pm at the West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

The Oct. 9 meeting will include candidates for the U.S. House of Representative 14th District; State Representative 99th District; and State Board of Education.

The Oct. 23 meeting will include candidates for Geauga County Commissioner and for the two judges for the 11th District Court of Appeals.

Meal Delivery Drivers Needed

The Home Delivered Meals Program provides nutritious lunches to Geauga’s seniors Monday through Friday. Volunteers pick up the meals at four senior centers – Chesterland, Thompson, Middlefield and Chardon.

The meals are normally picked up around 11 a.m. and delivered to seniors along prearranged routes. Each route is different; some focus on senior apartment buildings while others are scenic drives throughout the county. Delivery usually takes between one and a half to two hours from start to finish. Drivers are able to deliver lunch to 10 to 15 homebound seniors each shift.

As the senior population continues to grow, the Department on Aging needs volunteer drivers for these routes. Drivers must be 18 or older, have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Fall Family Fun Day

Geauga County Job and Family Services is hosting a fall family fun day at the Geauga County Fairgrounds Natural Resource Area on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free events include archery with Geauga Bow, scavenger hunt, horse drawn wagon rides and fishing. Bring your own bait and tackle.

Hot dogs, popcorn and cider will be on sale to benefit Moorhead Scholarship Fund, which is specifically for children who have been in the care of GCJFS to help aide in the cost of furthering their education.

Special Hands Hosts Book Signing

On Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, author Barry Henkin will be at Special Hands Shoppe, 15910 West High St. in Middlefield, to autograph his book, “Why Am I So Special?”

Faced with developmental challenges since birth, Henkin wrote his autobiography in the hope of motivating others to live their lives to their fullest potential. A popular guest speaker, he offers advice and encouragement on how to achieve personal fulfillment despite life’s physical, mental, emotional and societal obstacles.

The event is free and open to the general public. Special Hands will retain 25 percent of any book purchases made.

Creations Craft Sale

The Children’s Guild of Cleveland is hosting a boutique on Oct. 9 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Kirtland Country Club. Items include holiday decor, jewelry, gourmet and personal items.

Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. before shopping; cost is $45.

Steeple Fund Craft Show

Pilgrim Christian Church will hold its first annual Steeple Fund Craft Show and bake sale Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in its fellowship hall at 202 S. Hambden St. in Chardon.

In addition to goods from local crafters and artisans, special items will be raffled off, and lunch and snacks will be available for purchase.

All proceeds will be applied to the steeple fund to renovate the church tower and replace the bell and spire on the steeple.

Fall Heritage Day

The 12th annual Mesopotamia Fall Heritage Day takes place Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mesopotamia Commons, 8719 State Route 534.

Hosted by the Mesopotamia Chamber of Commerce, the event features skilled artisans in traditional Amish and Yankee crafts from the greater Mespo area and annual quilt raffle at 3 p.m. Crafters in period costume will perform outdoor demonstrations. There will be an Amish bake sale featuring homemade fry pies

Amish Wedding Dinner

The Friends of WomenSafe annual Amish Wedding Dinner is Oct. 4 at Yoder’s Home Cooking, 14729 Patch Road, Burton. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner being served at 6 p.m.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter

Rescue Village and PetFix Northeast Ohio mobile surgical van have teamed up to help stop pet overpopulation with Fix it in the Farmland. The program provides low cost spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs and is available to low income and Amish families; qualifications apply.

One does not have to live in Geauga County to use the clinics.

A clinic will take place Oct. 3 at 10418 Kinsman Road in Newbury. A second clinic will be Oct. 17 at 15020 Shedd Road in Burton. Cost is $15 per animal.

Dairy Queen Scout Fundraiser

Support Boy Scout Troop 195 on Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. by going to Chesterland Dairy Queen, 8423 Mayfield Road, Chester Township.

Mention “Boy Scouts” and Dairy Queen will donate 20 percent of all proceeds to the Boy Scouts.

Chardon Fall Fest Returns

The City of Chardon’s Fall Fest will be held Oct. 4 from 7-9 p.m. on Chardon Square. The evening will include pumpkin carving, sponsored by the Chardon Area Rotary; scarecrow making, sponsored by the Chardon Area Kiwanis; Fritz the balloonatic, sponsored by the Chardon Square Association; and a DJ, which will be providing music, sponsored by the City of Chardon. There will be free hot dogs, cider and roasted marshmallows, which will be fresh from an open fire.

Western Style Square Dance

The North Bloomfield Historical Society will host a Western style square dance with line dancing on Oct. 4, from 7-9:30 p.m., at the town hall located at the corner of routes 45 and 87.

No dancing experience is necessary.

Traditional Amish Auction

A benefit auction for DDC Clinic – Center for Children with Special Needs will be held Oct. 10 beginning at 4 p.m. at 17719 Newcomb Road in Middlefield.

Event features live auction, including a two-car 24×24-foot garage built to one’s specifications on site, horses, quilts, furniture, crafts, flowers and vegetables. Homemade soft pretzels, burgers and fries, pie and ice cream will be for sale.

Cooking With Housing Coalition

The Geauga County Housing Coalition will hold its second annual fundraiser on Oct. 24 from 6- 8:30 p.m. at Metzenbaum Center, 8200 Cedar Road in Chester Township. Numerous Geauga County agencies will have their special chili recipes for attendees to taste and judge. A silent and Chinese auction will be held along with surprise entertainment and numerous door prizes.

Celebrate Feral Cat Day

In honor of National Feral Cat Day, Rescue Village is holding its second annual Feline Fixin Frenzy on Oct. 15 and 17. All feral/free-roaming cats will be altered, given a one-year rabies and FVRCP vaccine, and their left ear will be tipped.

Fees will be dropped to only $10 per cat. To register, call Erin Hawes at 440-338-4819 ext. 14. Appointments are required; spaces will fill quickly.

All participants must complete the TNR application and properly qualify for the program’s services prior to the date of surgery.

KCE Open Mike Night

Kenston Community Education, in association with Matthew F. Blowers III and Emerick Gordon, are offering Open Mike Nights for all talented children, teens and adults to showcase their songs, dancing, poetry, comedy, musical instrument ability, juggling and or any other talents that they wish to perform and share. Open Mike will be held Thursdays starting Oct. 2 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Auburn Town Hall on the corner of East Washington Street and Auburn Road in Auburn Township.

Spectators are welcome, but seating is limited to 50. There will be a sign up sheet at the door to determine the order of the performers.
