Dems Set for Garage Sale

Kelly Miller Circus
July 17 & 18
The Kiwanis Club of West Geauga welcomes the Kelly Miller Circus to the West Geauga High School grounds, 13401 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township, on Friday at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m.
At 7:30 a.m. Friday, the public is welcome to come and watch the animals being unloaded and fed, witness the raising of the giant Big Top, followed by a special tiger meet and greet. Guides will be furnished for school groups and anyone attending.
Tickets are on sale at Discount Drug Mart in Chester Township, Chagrin Falls, Mentor and Highland Heights at $12 per adult and $6 for children under 12.
On circus day, adult tickets are $16 and child tickets are $8. Ringside seats are available at the circus box office before the show for $2 each.
Any ticket can be used for any performance.

Free Breakfast
July 18, 8:30-10:30 a.m.
The men of Ledgewood Christian Church are hosting a free breakfast. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and orange juice are on the menu along with milk and coffee.
The church is at 8261 Kinsman Road, Russell Township, just west of Route 306.
Memorial Poker Run
July 18
Registration for the sixth annual Shawn Wilkes Memorial Poker Run begins at 10:30 a.m. at Hickory Lake Inn and Party Center, 14592 Stone Road in Newbury. All vehicles welcome. First bike out at noon; all back by 5 p.m.
Dinner for nonparticipants in poker run begins at 4 p.m., with dinner served until 7 p.m. Event includes music, Chinese auction and door prizes.
Cost is $25 per couple or $15 per single. All proceeds benefit the Shawn Wilkes Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund.
Rummage for Rescue
July 18 & 19
Rescue Village will be holding its first annual “Rummage for Rescue” rummage sale at Kenston Middle School, 17425 Snyder Road, Bainbridge. All proceeds benefit Rescue Village.
Early bird hours are Saturday from 8-9 a.m. The regular sale continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sale includes furniture, decorations, artwork, pet supplies and more. Donations are no longer being accepted.
Early bird entry fee is $10 and $3 for regular sale hours. Cash, credit and checks will be accepted

GOP Women’s Summer Picnic
July 19, 2-5 p.m.
The Geauga County Women’s Republican Club’s annual summer picnic will take place at Scenic River Retreat, 10900 Mayfield Road in Munson Township. Event includes a children’s fishing pond, catch and release.
Cost is $10 per person or $20 per family.

Community Picnic
July 19, 3:307 p.m.
Prince of Peace, Chesterland and Mentor churches, will be hosting a community picnic at The Rookery, 10110 Cedar Road, Munson Township.
The churches will provide the meat and paper products. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.
The afternoon will begin with a Family Scavenger Hunt and Dessert Contest along with other games. Contemporary worship music at 5 p.m. will be followed by dinner.

Good Music and Ice Cream
July 21, 7-9 p.m.
Bainbridge’s Heritage Park will be the site of a band concert and ice cream social sponsored, in part, by the Bainbridge Historical Society and Skala Insurance. Northeast Ohio’s renowned Rock Radio Band will provide pop and dance music from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Sing-a-long will be offered, too.
The historical museum will be open at 6:30 p.m. for tours and remain open during the concert. Bring chairs or blankets and enjoy a fun evening.
Antique Power Exhibition
July 24-26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Historical Engine Society and Geauga County Historical Society is holding the 45th annual Antique Power Exhibition on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton.
The show features a large display of old, vintage, antique farm and construction equipment, as well as engines of all types and styles. The event will also feature the products of the John Deere Co.
There will also be a parade of tractors around Burton Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.
Admission is $2 Friday and $6 Saturday and Sunday. Kids 6-12 are $3 and free for 5 and under.

Scrap Tire Collection
July 25, 8 a.m. to noon
Troy Township will host its seventh annual scrap tire collection event in the parking lot behind the Community House located at 13950 Main Market Road. Bring identification to verify Troy Township residency; IDs will be checked.
Passenger vehicle and small truck/SUV tires only. No semi or tractor tires accepted. A maximum of eight tires per household. Tires must be off rims.
The event is made possible through a grant received from the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.

Canning 101
Aug. 1, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Ohio State University Extension and the Geauga County Farm Bureau will present Canning 101 at the Patterson Center 14269 Claridon-Troy Road at the Patterson Center in Burton on the fairgrounds.
Beth Stefura, extension educator for Mahoning County, will discuss all aspects of food preservation, including canning and freezing in the demonstration kitchen.
The class is free and open to the public thanks to support of the Farm Bureau.
Additionally, OSU-E will be testing pressure gauges through Sept. 11. Owners can bring in their lid any time during regular Extension hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and will be called for pickup and the results. Gauges must be labeled with the owner’s name and phone number.

Church Hosts Clothing Swap
Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Morning Star Friends Church is holding a family clothes swap at the church located at 12550 Ravenna Road in Chardon. The shopping day provides families the opportunity to get rid of clothes they no longer need and replace them with new-to-them clothes for free. One does not have to give clothes to receive clothes.
The church will accept clothing donations on July 31 only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Place gently used clothes into bags clearly labeled men’s, women’s, boys or girls. Pre-sorting by size is requested.

Next Step Reverse Raffle

Geauga County Kiwanis clubs are holding a reverse raffle at Middlefield Sale Barn on Nauvoo Road, Middlefield. Grand prize is $4,000.
Tickets are $125 per couple and $75 per person and are available at Middlefield Bank in Newbury (ask for Kathy) or from any Geauga Kiwanis Club member.

GCRTA Annual Picnic
Aug. 4
The Geauga County Retired Teachers’ Association will hold its annual picnic at Chicagami Park, Pine Grove Shelter located at 17957 Tavern Road in Parkman. Gathering time will begin at 11:15 a.m., followed by the business meeting at 11:30 a.m., and picnic lunch at noon.
After the meal, the grant-in-aid recipients will be introduced and presented with their awards. A time of conversation with fellow retirees will conclude the event.
Please bring a dish to share and a place setting. Nancy Speck’s pulled pork sandwiches and beverages will be provided.

Molly Goes to War

Hamlet Village in Chagrin Falls is hosting the first of two summer history series on Chagrin Falls history, with Chagrin Falls Historical Society speakers.
Laura Gorretta will present a program highlighting information and letters that the Molly Chittenden Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution sent to Chagrin Falls men and women during World War II.
The talk is illustrated with photo-graphs of service men and women from the collections of the Chagrin Falls Historical Society, painting a picture of life in the Village during that time.
Gorretta is a member of DAR and the author of the book, Chagrin Falls, an Ohio Village History.

Parade Participants Needed
Aug. 9
Parade participants are needed for the annual Harvest Festival (Obzinky) held at DTJ Taborville in Auburn Township. Wanted are old cars, motorcycles, unusual items, costumes, alpacas, horses, dogs, chickens, goats or anything that represents a harvest festival. The parade lines up at 1 p.m. and steps off at 2 p.m.
