The Chester Township Board of Trustees meeting on July 30 opened at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by David Conley, of The Illuminating Company, regional external affairs. Conley spoke in regard to LED street lighting programs and energy efficiency programs in which the township can use the NOPEC grant monies to help facilitate the cost.

The board approved minutes from the June 16 and July 20 meetings.

The Chester Township Road Department amended the policy to wear masks while in the building. Trustees continued discussions in regard to the road department’s truck purchase, including partially financing some of the cost. The board approved after the fact up to $2,540.02 payable to Cerni International for repairs to truck number 15.

In fire department business with the recommendations of Fire Chief John Wargelin, the board unanimously approved the hiring of two full-time positions to the Chester Township Fire Department contingent on several final evaluations and testing. Congratulations to Michael Fulton and Frank Virgant. The board approved a wage adjustment for full-time firefighter Connor Bachman to $20.30 per hour effective Aug. 9 upon completion of required training.

In new business, the board approved payment of $91,304.00 to OTARMA for renewal of township property and liability insurance and approved the disposal of two Dell monochrome laser printers as they are no longer in working condition and have no value.

The board approved a resolution for a new coronavirus relief fund, which will enable the township to offset additional expenses resulting from the virus.

In township park business, the West Geauga Kiwanis Concerts in the Park have had a good showing this year.

The planning committee questionnaire is 77 percent complete, with a majority of people desiring to keep the township rural. Most of the work left to finish is summarizing the written comments in the questionnaires.

Senior trash pick-up will be held Sept. 14-16. Call the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130 to enroll.

Chester’s Community Cleanup Day will be held on Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recycle Park. Call the road department at 440-729-9110 with questions regarding acceptable items.

Trustees then went into an executive session to consider the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion or compensation of public employees. After returning from executive session, the meeting adjourned.
