With the threat of COVID-19 and the restrictions on social gatherings, the Hambden Township Trustees have canceled all of the traditional Memorial Day services and parade. Knowing the Memorial Day services at the township is a time-honored tradition for the community, the trustees, along with the Fire Chief Scott Hildenbrand, have come up with an alternative.

The reading of the names at the Veteran’s Memorial has been videoed and will be put on YouTube for all to see. A senior from Chardon High School, who is a Hambden resident, is editing the video. A link to the video will soon be available on the township website: www.Hambdentownship.com. The traditional red geraniums have been ordered and will be planted by township staff before Memorial Day.

Township trustees in conjunction with the fire department are going to bring the parade to the residents. On Memorial Day, May 25, a procession will start at the Hambden Park Veteran’s Memorial at 9 a.m., travel all the roads in the township and end at the township cemetery to honor the veterans buried there. There will be no sirens on the fire trucks.  The fire trucks will be decorated with flags and the firemen will be in traditional dress uniforms.  The fire trucks will be followed by a township truck pulling a trailer with all three trustees. The truck and wagon will be decorated with flags and banners honoring departed heroes and thanking all veterans for their service. The trailer will also have a PA system playing patriotic music provided by the Lakeland Civic Band.

The trustees and fire department of Hambden Township would like to thank all communities for staying safe and helping the Hambden honor its veterans during this very different and challenging time.
