Hello from Geauga County, Amish Country,

It was a foggy morning and 50 degrees on March 14, so sugaring might be over for the season. Farmers are plowing and the produce and greenhouse folks are starting to plant things, and so another busy season has begun.

Our sympathy goes to the family of Jake Byler in the passing of their mother Susie. Her funeral was on March 15. I wonder it would bring sister Liz Yoder down from Mio, Mich.

The morning of March 9, I along with Andrew and Mary Yoder, Mrs. Maureen Shetler, her daughter Lorena, Mrs. Jake Miller Irene, her daughter Martha Rapinz, Mrs. Emmy Lou Yoder, Miss Sara May Fisher left for Mio, Mich., to attend the funeral of 30-year-old Mrs. Andrew Carrie Bontrager. She died suddenly from a blood clot. The funeral was held on March 10. I spent the evening of March 9 with daughter Betty and family. We left for home right after the funeral. I got to visit a bit with sisters Liz Yoder and Clara Kauffman, but failed to see sister Sylvia. It was a huge funeral. Sister Sylvia and husband Albert had just returned home the morning of March 10 in time for the funeral. They had been visiting family in Arizona, and then also went sightseeing, but I don’t know where all.

The blood drive on March 12 brought in around 70 donors. Our faithful donor Andy R. Schmucker donated his 200th time. He is 78 years old and still in good shape. Thanks, Andy.

Spring cleaning has begun. I hope to be done before outside work begins. We will need to get the lawn cleaned up ready to cut grass. There are lots of twigs to clean up.

Spring flowers are starting to bloom. The daffodils are peeking through. Tulips are several inches high. Will they be snow covered, yet?

Mrs. Matt Carol Yutzy, of Farmington Road, had an accident with a wagon that got out of control on March 4. Results are a badly broken shoulder, needing surgery. I know the feeling, as a year ago I also had shoulder surgery from a fall on the ice.

Mrs. Clara Hershberger, of Mumford Road, had a knee replacement on March 7. Hopefully, I can visit her sometime this week Her husband Crist also had knee surgery several months ago, so now it’s his turn to be her caregiver.

Huntsburg, Geauga County, Ohio: April 10, 1900

Nice weather at present.

Farmers are getting ready to sow oats.

Health is good in general.

There was considerable moving done this spring. Eighteen families moved to this county and all like it here.

Farmers are still making maple syrup, but I think it is about played out. This was a poor season for it. It sells at 50 to 55 cents a gallon.

Stephen Yoder went to Holmes County to buy a carload of dairy cows. Cows are very scarce here this spring; they sell as high as $58 at the sales.

“I need a man for the information bureau. He must be one who can answer every question, even the most unexpected, without losing his head.”

“I’m just the man you want. I am the father of eight children.”

An acquaintance of mine who is a physician told this story about her 4-year-old daughter. On the way to preschool, the doctor had left her stethoscope on the car seat and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it.

“Be still, my heart,” thought my friend. “My daughter wants to follow in my footsteps.”

Then, the child spoke into the instrument, “Welcome to McDonalds. May I take your order?”

You all take care. Enjoy spring.
