Hello from Geauga County, Amish Country,
Another beautiful day greeted us on April 18, which is being enjoyed very much.
Neighbor farmers are working in their fields, getting ready to plant oats and corn. Greenhouses are being filled.
Son Perry’s had a fire in their greenhouse, where they lost all their almost 200 hanging baskets plus many other plants. They have put up new plastic and have about filled up the greenhouse again.
We are sorry to hear of the fire at cousin Mose J. Miller’s on Hayes Road. They lost most everything in their shop.
Leaving from the Ortman Clinic in South Dakota on April 16 were Bill and Anna Bender and Ellen Hershberger and more who I’m not sure of. They plan to be back this coming weekend.
In my last letter I stated that Amanda Byler was staying at her sister Mary Ann’s, but she has her home at her brother Mahlon and Mary Byler’s on Larson West.
Martins are coming back, but so far less than usual. Maybe the cold weather we had scared them off. Sadly, it sure did not bother the starlings or sparrows.
I got my one flowerbed cleaned out last week. Now, I need to get the rest done and plant a few more things.
Published to be married on May 5 is granddaughter Susan, daughter of son Joe and Saloma, to Mark, son of Vernon and Nancy Yoder. Services will be at son Richard’s. We also got an invitation for the same day of Linda Byler and Delbert Kurtz. So, the wedding season has begun.
We are looking forward to having daughter Betty and some of her family come from Mio, Mich., for the wedding.
Danny Kauffman has been at Briar Hill after a hospital stay. He has been fighting cancer for quite some time. He is 28 years old and is the son of David and Laura.
From Out of the Past
Middlefield, Ohio: April 9, 1899
We made our trip to “Yankeedom” and arrived all right. Our stock and household goods also arrived safely.
We like the country well so far, but the weather was unfavorable since we are here.
We have plenty of work here this spring; sugaring is still going on. We have gathered about 40 barrels of sap and have made about 30 gallons of syrup. There are 1,040 trees tapped in our sugar bush. We have a good sugarhouse, so we can make syrup day and night. I think we may have about one more good run, yet.
I want the Budget sent to Middlefield instead of Charm.
Respectfully, J.H. Miller

At the Barbershop: One day a priest walked in to the barbershop for a haircut. When he was finished, the man said he didn’t need to pay since he was doing God’s work. The next day, he came by with a nice bouquet of flowers. About a week later, a cop went in and the barber said thank-you for your service to society, please don’t pay. The next morning, he dropped by with some coffee and donuts. A couple of weeks later, a lawyer came in and after his haircut, the barber thanked him for his service to the justice system and told him there was no need to pay. The next day the lawyer came by with another five lawyers.
The manager at a restaurant was a friendly, jovial man. But, there was one subject you didn’t dare discuss in front of him – his height. Or, should I say, his lack of it. One day he stormed through the door and announced angrily, “Someone just picked my pocket.” Most of the employees were speechless, except for one gal who blurted out, “How could anyone stoop so low?”
Thought for the Day
If you can’t see the bright side, polish the dull side.
Today will never return. Use it well.
