Braided-n-Banded

Braided-n-Banded is a 4-H club for horse projects. At the January meeting, the club members made blankets to donate to the Linus project. Some club members signed up to volunteer at the Special Olympics on April 27.

At the last meeting on April 4, club members received their project books for the year. Health and safety officer Maia Grandini passed out information about mud fever and different types treatment and prevention.

Breeders and Feeders

The Breeders and Feeders 4-H Club held its March meeting recently at Huntsburg Town Hall. Prior to the business meeting, the rabbit members went over the parts of the rabbit and discussed taking their rabbits to Liberty Assisted Living Nursing Home, Holly Hill and Burton Health Care to visit with the residents for Easter.

The swine members had a speaker about proper feed and nutrition from Kent Feed. The Cloverbud members enjoyed coloring eggs for Easter and the poultry members enjoyed trying duck that was cooked by the poultry advisor.

During the business meeting, there was much to be discussed. Quality assurance was discussed because it will be held on May 4 from 10 a.m. to noon, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to test out of quality assurance must contact the Extension Office and register for the test, which will be held April 10 at 6 p.m.

Also, Courtney gave everyone a reminder about having bakery for the bake sale that will be held at the Brad Wells Reverse Raffle Benefit on April 27. Ashley P., historian, reminded everyone to take pictures at club events and then get them to her for the scrapbook.

Mr. Smith discussed some changes that are being done to hopefully speed up the livestock sale at the fair this year, such as starting times being a half hour earlier. Kelsey Z. discussed the Junior Fair Auxiliary for younger members ages 12 to 14 that are not yet eligible for Junior Fairboard. If anyone is interested, let her know.

After the business meeting was adjourned, the beef kids meet and went over the what they should be doing with their animal at this time and also discussed the six Pillars of Character which are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and civic virtue.

Geauga Dairymen

Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club held a meeting on April 7. The members finalized details to attend Dairy Palooza in Wooster on May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All the club members, the advisors and several parents plan to attend and the club will cover the registration cost.

The Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover Campaign was discussed. This campaign is taking place May 8-18. The advisor shared that the OSU Extension website provides resources covering a variety of dairy topics for 4-H members from genetics to handling livestock.

A report from the recent 4-H Sales Committee was given explaining the dairy baskets the club will sell at the livestock sale during the fair. The advisor shared information about the cows that some of the members will borrow to show at the 2013 Geauga County Fair. All animals should be selected by mid-May so the members can start working with them.

The second half of the meeting focused on quality assurance. Topics discussed included animal housing, animal identification, maintaining records, animal treatment/ethics and medications.

The next meeting will be held on May 7 at 4 p.m.
