Canine Conditioning and Rehab Workshop
September 18, 2017

Workshop runs from 12-4 p.m. Oct. 1 at Cold Nose Companions Dog Training

Cold Nose Companions Dog Training is bringing Kathy Topham, DVM, CCRT, VSMT, CMAV to speak to dog owners on the subject of canine conditioning and rehabilitation from injury.

This workshop is suitable for pet owners as well as professionals. The workshop, which costs $60, will be held at Cold Nose Companions Dog Training, 12531 GAR Highway, Chardon, from 12-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Whether a dog is a canine sports athlete, a committed backyard ball-chaser or an aging couch potato, he or she might experience an orthopedic injury or discomfort.

Topham will speak on how to help dogs avoid injury, or recover from one, for long-term health and vitality. Owners can learn the basics of canine conditioning and fitness to prevent problems, as well as what to do if their dog experiences pain or injury. Specifically, her workshop will address:

  • Conditioning and fitness for long-term health and vitality — whether for sports competition or backyard fun
  • Common canine injuries and how to prevent them
  • How to identify early warning signs of pain and injury, and what to do when you recognize those signs
  • What rehabilitation therapy is and how it can help your dog

Topham is a veterinarian who specializes in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. She assists dogs and their humans with conditioning to participate safely in canine sports, as well as rehabilitation therapy when injuries and other orthopedic conditions arise at her clinic, Pawsitive Results Animal Rehabilitation Center.

She received her veterinary degree at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995.

Her special interest in canine sports medicine was sparked with volunteering as a trail veterinarian for sled dog races in the lower 48 states, and further developed alongside her passion for dog agility. Through these experiences, Topham saw a great need to further her education in canine sports medicine, so her first certification in Canine Rehabilitation at The Animal Rehabilitation Institute came in 2004, quickly followed by her certification in Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy by the Healing Oasis in 2005 and, most recently, her certification in Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians by Colorado State University in 2009.
