CFMS Science News
Middle school students have been learning about optics, lenses and mirrors in their science classes. To better get a grasp of the information, students dissected sheep eyes. Through this exercise, students were able to identify the parts of the eye including the cornea, aqueous humor, pupil, iris, lens (convex), vitreous humor, retina, choroid and optic nerve.
In addition, students became skilled in explaining the functions of each part of the eye and were able to describe the path light takes as it enters the eye. Students also had to show proficiency with the use of science equipment to efficiently remove each specified part of the eye.
One School, One Book Kick Off
Superintendent Bob Hunt recently helped kick off Gurney School’s 2013 One School, One Book program. During his talk to the student body about plans for a new playground, the Gurney staff suddenly broke out into a flash mob. In groups, all of the Gurney staff members joined together to surround the students as they did their surprise dance to the Jackson Five’s “ABC.” Halfway through the dance, more staff members appeared on stage to dance and held signs that came together and read, “One School One Book.” It was so exciting that all the Gurney students joined in the dancing and celebrating.
This year, Gurney students will be reading “Lunch Money” by Andrew Clements. Many exciting activities are planned for the students to connect to the characters and events in the book.
The Gurney website for this program is up and running with a calendar, a blog, a page where the school posts pictures of students reading with family members at home, links of interest tied to the story and more.
At the conclusion to the assembly, all students received a copy of the book. Gurney was the 2012 National Model School for the One School One Book program and this year promises to be just as much fun.
Local Artist Visits CFHS
Local artist Tom Hubbard recently discussed his current public art project and working process with David King’s high school Advanced Placement Portfolio class. The project, a memorial to honor a Cleveland environmental activist, is in the initial design phase.
Hubbard was commissioned in late 2012 by a Cleveland arts organization to develop concepts for the memorial that is being planned for a Cleveland lakefront park.
CFHS Musical Announced
Chagrin Falls High School will be presenting Elton John and Tim Rice’s “AIDA: School Edition” on March 15-17 at the Performing Arts Center on the High School Campus.
At its core, “AIDA: School Edition” is a timeless love story. Set against the dramatic time period of the pharaoh’s, Egypt has enslaved Nubia and the great power’s prince Radames is engaged to the fashionable Amneris. However, when Aida, the princess of Nubia, comes to the palace as a slave, love turns everything upside down and leads everyone down paths they never could have imagined.
“This is a story that has something for everyone,” says music director Youssef Hamid. “It is a classic story told in a unique way with music from pop icon Elton John. Many people will be surprised to learn that this is, in fact, a Disney production. It is a great family show.”
The show is being directed by Richard Hinkelman and choreographed by Amy Greene. The Chagrin Falls High School Drama Department is so excited about the upcoming production that they have added an additional matinee on March 16. Please visit the Chagrin Falls School District’s main webpage for more information and to purchase tickets.
Food Drive A Success
The Chagrin Falls High School Student Athlete Advisory Council recently donated 490 pounds of food to the Cleveland Food Bank for its winter canned food drive. Bradley Munday, who was in charge of the community service aspect of the Athletic Council’s effort, organized the event.
Among their innovative ways to gather food, the Athletic Council allowed anyone who brought canned goods to a recent home basketball game or wrestling match to receive free entry to the contest. The swim team also brought in canned goods to a practice as part of the project.
This is the second successful community service project the student athletes at Chagrin Falls have completed. They also helped collect school supplies for schools in need this fall.
