CVC Sportsmanship Award Recipients Named
The Chagrin Valley Conference held its annual luncheon to honor a male and female athlete from each league school who has been chosen as the recipients of the league’s Sportsmanship Award. The 2013 representatives for Chagrin Falls High School are Kate Girouard and Ben Vandertill.
Kate has participated in four years of cross country, swimming and track. Ben has participated in four years of football, swimming and lacrosse. Both clearly have exhibited graciousness in winning and losing, as well as having a proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with their competitors.
Gurney Art Show Begins
All Gurney students in grades K 3 will have their artwork displayed among the more than 400 pieces exhibited throughout the first floor of the Gurney building during Gurney Art Walk 2013.
The opening ceremony will be on May 9 from 6 8 p.m. It will feature music by Chagrin Falls High School senior Grace Guyot, as well as demonstrations from local artists Joan Cooper Rusek, Jack Kruyne, Will Czerr and Pam Spremulli. In addition, there will be an art show scavenger hunt and a few other surprises.
The exhibit will be open to the public May 1022 from 3:45-8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Art Walk is an opportunity for parents and community members to become aware of the young people’s enthusiasm for art and how they are engaged in studying as well as creating their own work. It demonstrates the respect for each student’s uniqueness and individual accomplishments. All of these enrich other areas of the curriculum and help students establish habits of the mind that will last a lifetime, during a “Voyage of Discovery.”
From County Fair to Tiger’s Lair
Chagrin Falls School s will be celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Harris Stadium, home of the Chagrin Falls Tigers’ teams. Many area residents have fond memories of the stadium.
The Chagrin Falls Booster Club is giving everyone the opportunity to share in this celebration.
Let a favorite memory live on as it’s engraved on a Harris Stadium centennial brick. The bricks will be placed as part of the walkway in front of the stadium, between the bleachers and the track.
The order deadline for this summer’s installation is May 31. For more information and to place an order, visit the Chagrin Falls Booster webpage at www.cfboosterclub.org/stadium or go to the school district’s main webpage.
COSI Visits Intermediate School
The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) on Wheels recently rolled into the Chagrin Falls Intermediate School. COSI has been inspiring the scientists, dreamers and innovators of tomorrow since 1964.
The day began with a high energy, all school assembly presented by a COSI demonstrator, who introduced the concept “Investigating Energy” that would be explored during the day. The assembly was followed by a number of hands-on activity sessions.
During these sessions students were able to informally interact with the activities, spending as little or as much time as they like at each of the 10 stations including “Pass the Juice,” “Watts Up?” and “Paddle Power.” Students were able to experiment directly with energy related phenomena and to engage in meaningful science learning experiences that enabled them to understand their world.
Max Faulds, a sixth-grade student, summarized the experience when he said, “COSI is a great way to learn science! In the assembly we tried to help the COSI volunteer power her Segway by using energy. We tried coal, wind, hydropower and nuclear power. Learning is easy when you’re having fun!”
Thank you to parents Janeen Daugherty and Liz Wirbel for organizing the event and to the 40 parents who volunteered.
