Volunteer Tutors Needed
Geauga County Job and Family Services is looking for caring, motivated adults to participate in its Volunteer Tutoring program that matches volunteers with local elementary, middle school and high school students who need help in basic reading and math.
Volunteers will be required to attend a one-hour training at Geauga County Job and Family Services and complete a fingerprint background check.

Benefit for Tammy Kearns
Feb. 18, 5-8 p.m.
A benefit for Tammy Kearns, who is fighting breast cancer, will be held at Newbury United Community Church, 14916 Auburn Road. Event includes a spaghetti and meatball dinner, Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and bake sale.
Cost is $13 for adults and $6 for children.
Spring Yoga Session
Wednesdays, 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Join for a gentle, progressive style of yoga suitable for all ages and body types at the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St. No experience is needed.
Conducted by master teacher and instructor Susan Gundersen, a suggested donation of $10 is requested, with proceeds going towards the church’s Guatemala mission. Bring a yoga mat, light blanket and wear comfortable clothing.

Aububon Highlights Native Bees
Feb. 21, 7 p.m.
Blackbrook Audubon, the local chapter of the Audubon Society covering Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties, will hold a program on bee identification and appreciation at Penitentiary Glen, 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland. Speaker Denise Ellsworth, of Ohio State University, will focus on the biology of Ohio’s most common bees and describe their importance in pollination.

Geauga County Public Employee Retirees (PERI) 86, an organization that supports the retirement system and benefits, will at St. Mary’s Church, 401 North St. in Chardon. Guest speaker is the Honorable Judge Terri Stupica.

Geauga Beekeepers Meet

The Geauga County Beekeepers will meet in the main lobby at the Kent State Campus at 11141 Clairdon Troy Road in Burton.

Cleveland Food Bank will be distributing food to families in need at Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Road, Chardon.
CCAT Lebron Shoe Raffle
The Chardon Community Action Team is raffling an authentic LeBron James practice shoe provided by the LeBron James Foundation.
Tickets will be sold at all home Chardon High School boys basketball games through Feb. 18. The raffle will be held during the last game.
Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The winner of the raffle need not be present at the last game to win.
All monies raised will be spent to support the mission CCAT to lower tobacco, alcohol, and drugs in our youth.
Audubon Scans The Shoreline
Feb. 25, 9 a.m.
Join Blackbrook Audubon for a tour of popular birding sites along the Lake Erie shoreline. Participants will search for wintering gulls, waterfowl and other reported sightings in Fairport Harbor. Bring binoculars.

Bluegrass Jamboree

The Hambden Grange Bluegrass Jamboree at 9778 Old State Road in Chardon will feature Matheson Family Pride and Mountain Therapy. Refreshments will be available.
Chili Cook-off
Feb. 26, 4-6 p.m.
All are welcome to participate in a chili cook-off at Mayfield Church, 7747 Mayfield Road, Chester Township.
Judging begins at 3:30 p.m.; contestants should have their chili to the church no later than 3 p.m. Chili should be in a 5-quart Crockpot.

Cost to sample and eat is $5 per person, with a maximum $15 per family. Hot dogs, cornbread, crackers and condiments provided.

Black Knights at the Races

The Newbury Schools Black Knight Parent Association is hosting its second annual Black Knights at the Races at Hickory Lake Inn, 14592 Stone Road in Newbury.
Advance tickets are $15, or $20 at the door, and include dinner and non-alcoholic beverages. The evening will include race wagering, Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and cash bar.

GCBDD Hosts Night to Shine
March 22, 6 p.m.
Geauga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (GCBDD), known as the Metzenbaum Center, is hosting its third annual Night to Shine event on at the Metzenbaum Center, 8200 Cedar Road in Chester Township. The event is open to all families who are enrolled in the GCBDD’s Early Intervention (EI) program and are actively receiving services.
There is no fee to participate and all enrolled families with children ages birth to 3 years are invited to attend. Families interested in participating must RSVP by calling 440-729-5250 ext. 1530 by March 6.
There will be refreshments, a DJ and several door prizes.

Financial Education Workshops
Feb. 23 and March 9, 6-8 p.m.
OSU Extension and Geauga County Job and Family Services will offer a two-part personal finance workshop at the Bainbridge Library, 17222 Snyder Road. The workshop is free and open to the public.
The first class is designed to get participants thinking about money and money issues in a new way. Topics will include communicating about money, tracking spending, identifying spending leaks, and organizing documents and valuable papers.
The second class will focus on the step by step process to set up a budget and get rid of debt as well as a discussion on establishing credit, how to repair credit and understanding a credit report and score.
The instructors will be Terri Worthington, family and consumer sciences educator from Ohio State University Extension, and Sara Shininger, Geauga County Job and Family Services.
A second workshop is scheduled for May 23 and June 6 from 6- 8 p.m. at the Middlefield Library, 16167 E. High St., Middlefield.
