Republican Leadership Initiative
The Geauga County Republican Party will hold specialized training called the Republican Leadership Initiative (RLI). The purpose is to more effectively organize at all levels. Receive training in cutting-edge campaign technology, leadership skills and building a volunteer network.
Training sessions will be held Feb. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Burton Library, 14588 W. Park St., and Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at Heritage House on Chardon Square.

Protect Geauga Parks
Feb. 10, 3:30 p.m.
Join Protect Geauga Park supporters for a “Hike into the Sunset.” Meet at the shelter at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St. in Montville Township and hike the park trails. Return to the shelter after the hike for hot cocoa.
It is an open shelter, so dress for the weather.

VFW Shrimp and Fish Dinners

Chardon VFW Post 6519 will offer breaded shrimp and fish dinners during its Queen of Hearts drawing Wednesday nights in February. Donation is $7.
Words and Wine
Feb. 13, 6:30 p.m.
Tom Hyland, associate professor librarian at Lakeland Community College, will be the featured poet at a meeting of Words and Wine, a poetry reading series. Open mic will precede his reading at Rider’s Inn, 792 Mentor Ave., Painesville.

Dorothy’s Porch Giveaway
Feb. 15-17
A free giveaway of clothing for the family, household items, toys, books and seasonal decorations will take place Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Road in Chardon. All are welcome.
Soup’s On With Next Step
Feb. 15, 6-9 p.m.
The Geauga County Democratic Women’s Caucus will host “Soup’s On! Warm Up With Next Step” at the Geauga Democratic Party Headquarters and Social Hall, 12420 Kinsman Road in Newbury.
At 7 p.m., there will a presentation by Andrea Pollock, director of Next Step, a local organization that provides housing and case management services for young adults 18-24 who are homeless and at-risk.
Several soups, salads and breads will be served. A donation of $10 is suggested.
Collections for Next Step will be accepted. Items needed include: paper products, snack foods, socks, body wash and gift cards for fast food places.

100 Women of East Geauga

CV Herb Society Meets

Upcoming VFW Post 9678 Events
Middlefield VFW 9678 is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for
Veterans in Need on Feb. 16 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the post located at 16013 E. High St. Cost is $8 at the door or $7 presale. For more information, call the post at 440-632-1257.

Songbirds of Ohio

Blackbrook Audubon will offer a free program on Ohio’s breeding songbirds at Penitentiary Glen Nature Center in Kirtland. Speaker is Gary Meszaros, a nature photographer for over 40 years. Everyone is welcome to attend. Programs cancelled due to weather will be announced on the iAlert system.
Food Distribution

The Cleveland Food Bank will be distributing food to people in need at Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Road in Chardon.
Audubon Visits Amish Country
Feb. 24, 9 a.m.
Join Blackbrook Audubon to visit Amish country in search of winter birds in the farm fields of Geauga County. Meet at the north entrance to Walter C. Best Preserve, 11620 Ravenna Road in Chardon. Participants will carpool or caravan from to the Hayes Road area near Middlefield.
Dress for the weather, bring binoculars and a spotting scope if available. After a morning of birding, lunch will be at Mary Yoder’s Amish Kitchen in Middlefield.

Spring Tree Sale
April 27-28
Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is holding its spring tree sale at the Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton. The sale offers a streamlined selection of both bareroot seedlings and 1-3 gallon container trees and shrubs. Rain barrels and compost tumblers are also available.
