EAA Chapter 5 will host its first meeting of 2019 at Geauga County Airport, 15421 Old State Rd, Middlefield, at 7 p.m.

EAA Chapter 5 will host its first meeting of 2019 at Geauga County Airport, 15421 Old State Rd, Middlefield, at 7 p.m. Come early for a 6:30 p.m. social before the meeting program.

Stay for some good old “hanger flying” starting at 8 p.m. following the program. Coffee and cinnamon rolls will be provided.

Each one-hour program encourages hanger flying at its best, presenting a short scenario followed by the question, “What would you do?” All scenarios are based on actual experiences by pilots just like you.

Meetings will alternate between an emphasis on IMC and VMC scenarios. The January meeting program will focus more on VMC, but there will be something for instrument rated pilots as well.

Cub Scout Dinner and Auction

Jan. 25, 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The purpose of this event is to raise funds to support events for the Pack for 2019 and support the work it does in the local community.

Friends of Middlefield Cub Scout Pack 3141 will be holding a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction at Parkman Community House, 16295 Main Market Road. Carry out is available.

Presale tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 5-12. Tickets at the door are $9 for adults and $6 for youth ages 5-12. Children under 5 are free.

Chinese auction tickets will be sold throughout the dinner. The drawing will take place around 7 p.m. Winners need not be present.

Food Distribution

Jan. 26, 9-11 a.m.

The Cleveland Food Bank will be distributing food to people in need at Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Road in Chardon.

Bluegrass Jamboree

Jan. 26, 6 p.m.

Hambden Grange will host Doghouse Entertainment’s Bluegrass Jamboree featuring Tug Creek and Backwoods Bluegrass. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Food stand is available. Tickets are $10 for adults; children under 11 years are free.

The Grange is located at 9778 Old State Road, Chardon.

VFW Cornhole Tournament

Jan. 26

Chardon VFW Post 6519, will host its annual cornhole tournament at the post located at 752 Water St. Practice begins at 6:30 p.m.; tournament starts at 7 p.m.

Entrance fee is $40 per team. Event also includes a 50/50 drawing. Pizza will be provided; bring a dish to pass. Sign-up sheet is behind the bar.

Blackbrook Checks for Birds

Jan. 27, 8 a.m.

Blackbrook Audubon invites birders of all levels to its monthly walk at Chagrin River Park. As the local chapter of National Audubon Society, Blackbrook is monitoring avian life in this Lake Metropark property to benefit the Chagrin River Corridor IBA, or Important Bird Area.

Meet at 3100 Reeves Road off Lost Nation Road in Willoughby on the fourth Sunday of each month. The walk is just over 1 mile on a level, paved path. The list of birds found is posted on eBird.org. For more information, visit blackbrookaudubon.org.

GEL Breakfast

Feb. 1, 7:30-9:30 a.m.

Geauga Growth Partnership, Kent State University at Geauga and Leadership Geauga will present “Geauga: State of the County” at the next Geauga Economic Leadership (G.E.L.) breakfast taking place at Kent State Geauga, 14111 Claridon-Troy Road in Burton.

Featured panelists include: Dr. Michael Bates, Notre Dame Schools; Jenn Barton, NAMI; Jamie Fisher, Middlefield Care Center; Gerry Morgan, Geauga County; John Bonner, Great Lakes Growers; Bill Patterson, Patterson Farms; and John Oros, Geauga Park District. Moderator is Jim McClintock.

A question and answer session will follow.

50 Gun Bash

Feb. 2, 11 a.m.

Ducks Unlimited 50 Gun Bash will be held in the Pavilion building at Heritage Market Place, 15848 Nauvoo Road in Middlefield. Doors open and side raffles start at 11 a.m.

The main raffle will be drawn at 1 p.m. and the last drawn at 5:30 p.m. One gun will be given away every five minutes. Food will be served from 1-4 p.m.

Attendance tickets are $20 each, advance purchase only. Raffle only tickets are $10 each or three for $20.

Tickets are available from all Ducks Unlimited committee members or at Great Lakes Outdoor Supply stores in Middlefield and Chester Township.

WomenSafe Casino Night

Feb. 2, 6-10 p.m.

WomenSafe presents its 18th annual Casino Night at the Patrician Party Center, 33150 Lakeland Blvd., Eastlake.

The agency’s largest annual fundraiser, the evening includes a night of casino gaming managed by professional dealers, a silent auction, lucky number auction, wine pull, open bar, sit-down dinner and many other chances to win

Registration is $70 per person or $500 for a table of eight. Advance registration is required.

Funds generated will provide much needed support for the Green House.

Newbury Kiwanis Pancake Breakfasts

Newbury Area Kiwanis Club is serving its all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts every Sunday in February from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Newbury High School cafeteria,14775 Auburn Road, Newbury Township.

Lantern Paint and Sip

Feb. 3, 3 p.m.

The Middlefield Recreation Department is hosting a sip and paint at the senior center located at 15820 Ridgewood Drive in Middlefield. Class includes appetizers. Bring a beverage one’s choice. Participants will be painting cardinals and birch trees on the glass panels of a lantern, which includes a battery-operated candle.

Class fee is $35 and includes step-by-step instruction from Debra Warren Miller and all art supplies. Register by Feb. 1. For information, call the recreation department at 440-632-5248.

GCRTA Meeting

Feb. 5, 11:15 a.m.

The Geauga County Retired Teachers Association will meet at the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St., Chardon. Gathering time will be followed by the business meeting at 11:30 a.m. and a breaded baked chicken luncheon at noon. A raffle for a free lunch and 50/50 raffle will be held.

Charlie McGibony, vice president and director of ground operations for Honor Flight Cleveland, will present the program.

For reservations, send a check for $18 made out to GCRTA to Judy Miller, 17130 Kinsman Road, Middlefield, OH 44062. Call her at 440-487-4324 to inform her of any dietary restrictions. Payment must reach her by Jan. 27.

Remember to bring paper products or canned goods for the Hunger Task Force. All retired school personnel are welcome to attend. If transportation is needed, call Geauga Transit at 440-285-2222.

Four Chaplains Program
