Special Meeting

This is to serve as notice that Geauga Park District’s Board of Park Commissioners will hold a special meeting Aug. 5 at 9 a.m. at Big Creek Park’s Donald W. Meyer to discuss the park district’s mission, vision and philosophy.

Changes to meeting schedules are always posted on the district website under About Your Parks, then Park Board.

Geocache Day

Even though Geauga Park District has been posting new geocache coordinates in each of its quarterly newsletters, participants have been clamoring for more. Summer ushers in the third Geocache Day of the year, taking participants to four more parks in a single day of treasure hunt fun.

Geocache Day: Summer is August 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve, 11620 Ravenna Road in Munson Township.

Geocaching is an up-and-coming challenge activity that gets people outside using their GPS to help locate hidden caches. Seasonal Geocache Days will provide even more fun and practice with a GPS, as well as the opportunity to explore even more parks.

Upon registration – required by phone at 440-279-0894 – participants will be assigned a card, such as a King of clubs, that they will need to retrieve from each of the caches. This season’s caches will be hidden in some of the county’s western parks: Orchard Hills Park, Bass Lake Preserve, Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park and Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve. The quest can begin any time during posted hours up to a week before, but must end at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve from 1-4 p.m.

Four cards tell the park district that all four hiding spots have been located and earn the participant four chances to win prizes. If ones schedule does not allow one to hit all four parks, earn a ticket for each card turned in by 4 p.m.

A complete set of instructions is posted at bit.ly/gpdgeocache. Anyone school age or older is welcome to participate in this free, family-friendly activity.

Beecome A Fan

Most people know bees and wasps as insects that sting. But, members of the order hymenoptera are also pollinators, predators, parasites and producers of honey.

The Buzz About Bees and Wasps is Aug. 15 from 7-8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Presented in cooperation with Joe Cluts, president of Geauga County Beekeepers, the program will include photos of honeybee swarms and bee trees, as well as other stinging insects and their homes. Geauga Park District also has examples of the nests of bald-faced hornet, European hornet and bumblebee.

Expect primarily PowerPoint and collected specimens, as the evening time slot is not conducive to going outdoors. Registration is not required.

Sages Story

Meet Bob Sage of Sage’s Apples, a fifth-generation family fruit and vegetable farm and farm market in Chardon, for a discussion of the history of the Sages’ agricultural work in the region.

Food: What Do Farms Have to Do With It? takes place Aug. 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Evening topics will include the Sages’ work with The Ohio State University and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, as well as their success in raising the best-tasting and highest-quality kind of locally grown produce: apples, red raspberries, blueberries, peaches, sweet corn, green beans, plums, nectarines, zucchini, beets and tomatoes.

Chairs will be set up in the round to encourage discussion and keep the atmosphere informal. Sharing of local foods is welcome. Registration is not required.
