Sit, Look, Listen, Relax

For those who are not familiar with the term, a “bird sit” is a program where nature lovers sit in one spot for a period of time and record all the birds seen and heard from that spot.

Now Geauga Park District has one on the calendar. Please drop in or out anytime during the following hours to sit a spell with a naturalist and help tally spring bird life at this park renowned for its bird watching.

Spring Bird Sit takes place May 17 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Eldon Russell Park, 16315 Rapids Road in Troy Township.

Sitters will want to dress for the weather and bring a chair and binoculars; signs will be posted en route to the assigned location. School age and up is most effective for counting. Registration is not required.

Incredible Backyard Edibles

Learn from Chef Kimberly McCune Gibson how to harvest, prepare and enjoy backyard edibles. Incredible Backyard Edibles is May 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Chef Kimberly’s roots are planted deeply in the memory of her Geauga County childhood, where her parents established early, lasting and intertwining beliefs in the nature of food and community. Daughter of a beekeeper, she witnessed firsthand the interdependence of the land and its people when she visited the Amish farmers who leased beehives for orchard pollination.

As a student at Auburn Career Center, Kimberly was supported by the community with scholarship awards that allowed her to train in classical European cuisine at the CIA in Hyde Park, N.Y. Grateful for this and respectful of fresh local products, she has gained a pointed urgency to give something back. She now champions the “Farmer to Restaurant” and “Pasture to Plate” causes and is a strong supporter of independent restaurant operators everywhere.

A current contestant on the Food Network’s Fat Chef, Chef Kimberly represents First Lady Michele Obama’s “Let’s Move” Initiative by serving as ambassador for the “Chef’s Move into Schools” Program for Chagrin Falls Schools. Her Hungry Bee business specializes in catering, cooking classes and personal chef services. A new project, ReHive Ale, has also become a passion, which links her childhood beekeeping hobby to her growing business.

This program is intended for adults. Registration is not required.
