Family Health & Safety Day

June 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center will present its eighth annual Family Health & Safety Day at the hospital’s campus, 13207 Ravenna Road in Claridon Township. The free community event kicks off with a UH 5K Race for Wellness at 8 a.m.

The event will offer a variety of family-friendly activities, safety tips, wellness screenings and educational materials that support and promote healthy lifestyles for people of all ages. The UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Safety Squad will also host activities. Free children’s bike helmets, with proper fitting, will also be available.

Free walkup screenings include balance and grip strength, bone density, hearing, cholesterol and glucose blood tests, and stroke risk assessments. Lower extremity vascular assessments and skin and prostate cancer screenings will also be offered at no cost, but require preregistration by calling 216-767-8435.

The UH 5K for Wellness is $15 preregistered and $20 on race day. Online registration is at HMApromotions.net and closes at 9 a.m. June 24. The first 300 entrants will receive a T-shirt, and awards will be offered for overall and age group winners. Proceeds from the 5K will benefit UH Seidman Cancer Center.

NAMI Speaker Meeting

June 29, 6:30 p.m.

Arthur Brite will be the guest speaker at the NAMI Geauga County educational speaker meeting at Notre Dame Educational Center, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon.

He will share his personal experience with mental illness, which has made him a best-selling author and keynote speaker. He will discuss his newly released book, “Find Your Extraordinary!”

Blood Pressure Screenings

Lake Health will offer free blood pressure checks at the Chardon Campus, 510 Fifth Ave., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Mindful Extension Series

July 6, 13, 20 and 27, 5:15-6:15 p.m.

The Ohio State University Extension in Geauga County is offering classes this summer to address several areas of family life. Terri Worthington, family life educator for Ohio State University Extension, will lead a group through mindfulness meditation: the how-to and the benefits of starting a mindfulness practice. Mindful Extension will be held at the OSU office in Chardon, 470 Center St., Bldg 5-A.

Class is $60 per person for all four weeks and includes materials and a CD set. Class is limited to 12 participants.
