Lions Take A Stand For Life

NDCL students and teachers joined hundreds of young people from the Cleveland Diocese and thousands of persons from throughout the United States for the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 25. Due to overwhelming student support, NDCL was able to charter its own bus and design its own itinerary this year.

The group departed late Thursday night and arrived early Friday morning to attend Mass at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, one of the 10 largest churches in the world. At noon, they gathered for the March for Life rally on the National Mall, featuring speeches by March for Life President Jeanne Monahan and several members of Congress. After the rally, they marched along Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill.

Marchers included Jenna Ambrose, Mary Boslett, Nathan Bryant, Caylee Buckman, Clayton DeWalt, Conor Fogarty, Jaqueline Guelette, Shante Harding, Jack Hyland, Mary Brigid Joyce, Maggie King, Brian King, Jacob Kowalczyk, Kathryn Kresnye, Brennan Macaluso, Gabby Misitti, Carolyn Mullins, Breanna Mysyk, Niarra Ogbanna and Shakir Ogbanna.

Also in the NDCL group were Michael Pennington, Allison Perpar, Erin Pioch, Alec Plumley, Karoline Porter, Kelsey Rahill, Kaitlyn Rayl, Anna Senchak, Brett Skursha, Molly Smith, Tom Somrack, Hallie Stacho, Wesley Stanovsek, Alyssa Strumbly, Ashley Sugar, Melissa Tannous, Katie Tercek, Alyssa Tyransky, Kennedy Westfall, Mary Wood, Julie Zagar, Rachel Zbiegien and Amanda Zbinovec.

Theology teachers Michael Suso and Emily Van Atta, math teacher Ericka Bella and physical education teacher Marco DiFranco accompanied the students to Washington. Mr. Suso took the lead in organizing this powerful witness to the value of life and the NDCL core value of justice.

Success At Science Olympiad

At last weekend’s Kenston High School Science Olympiad Invitational, NDCL students racked up some impressive results in competition against 34 talented teams northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania. The competition included 23 events in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology.

Juniors Joe Cermak and Zach Geizer had an extraordinary afternoon, winning bronze medals in both the rocks and minerals and the “Write It, Do It” events.

Eight other NDCL students placed in the tournament: seniors Noah Boksansky and Nathan Reed took fifth place in the remote sensing event; seniors Mike Macuga and Ben Wozniak finished in sixth place in the astronomy event; and Mandy Spangler and junior Matt Tavares earned seventh place while seniors Jonathan Kleve and Phil Aquila took eighth in the dynamic planet event.

Science teachers Chris Poulos and Guy Savastano and intervention tutor Tammy Eicher coach NDCL’s Science Olympiad team. Congratulations to the entire team on a great start in 2013.

Mock Trial Team Goes To Court

Judge Terri L. Stupica presided over this week’s scrimmage between NDCL and Kirtland High School’s Mock Trial teams at the Chardon Municipal Courthouse.

Attorneys Jeffrey Black, Nick Giegerich, Shawn Maestle and Eric Condon have been assisting the students as they prepare for next week’s competition. Social studies teacher Alex Dowger and English teacher Vicki Frabotta advise the team.
