Marketing Students Excel
Thirteen students from Mrs. Jean Getz’s Excel TECC Beachwood marketing class traveled to Columbus on March 15 to compete in the DECA marketing state championships. More than 4,000 of the best and brightest marketing students from across the state were tested about their knowledge of the business environment.
The competition was sponsored by the Ohio Department of Education and DECA, an international organization of marketing students. Students placing in the top four in each of the categories of the competition would advance to the International DECA Marketing Competition in Anaheim, Calif.
Students from Mrs. Getz’s marketing class competed in categories such as Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Retail, Food Marketing, Buying and Merchandising, Marketing Communications and Principles of Business Management and Administration.
The class’ first night in Columbus was spent taking a written test respective to their category and the foundations of marketing. On March 16, the students participated in case study scenarios with judges from the private sector. The case studies were real-world situations in which participants had to meet certain criteria by showing their competency in their respective field.
The case studies took place in two rounds. Students making it to the second round, (and also the “Top Ten” finalists for the category), participated in another case study with a different judge to determine the winners of the event.
Four of the five students from the Beachwood Marketing Program that advanced to the “Top Ten” in their event are from West Geauga. They were Mary Anderson, Marissa Stark, Geordi Kogovsek and Gavin Clark.
Within that top ten, Geordi Kogovsek won first place for the Principles of Business Management and Administration Event. He had the highest test score ever at the DECA District 10 Contest. Because Geordi has placed first in his event, he will receive a DECA scholarship that will be an additional $1,500 per year at Northwood University. In addition, he will travel to Anaheim at the end of April to compete with over 15,000 marketing students from around the world.
