Meet Officer Shaw
As a part of the community policing philosophy, Officer Mike Shaw of the Chardon Police Department has been assigned as the full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) for Chardon High School.
SROs are not just “cops” on campus. The program aims for SROs to build working relationships with the school’s staff as well as with student and parent groups and be visible within the school community.
The SRO becomes involved in the students’ lives as a positive role model and is available to assist in the classroom to demonstrate “real-life” application of concepts. The intent is that the positive experiences students have with the SRO will bridge the gap between students and law enforcement, and in doing so, help to provide for a safe school environment.
Although his main office is located inside Chardon High School, Officer Shaw will occasionally stop in to visit the middle school, Maple Elementary School and Park Elementary School. He can be reached through Chardon High School’s main office, or by direct email at chs.sro@chardonschools.org.
If you see him around, feel free to introduce yourself. The school resource officer position is being funded collaboratively by the school district, the City of Chardon and The Chardon Healing Fund with additional support from Chardon and Claridon townships.

Art Poster Contest
Munson PTO is sponsoring a poster art contest, in conjunction with the art show, for all students in grades K-5. The PTO needs students to discover their inner artists and design a poster it can use to promote the art show on April 27. The deadline to enter is March 25.
Prizes will be awarded to one winner from each grade level and a grand prizewinner will be selected overall. The grand prizewinner’s poster design will become the “face” of this year’s art show. The winner’s poster art will be featured on T-shirts, posters and other materials used to promote the show.
Winners will be announced on March 27. Remember to have fun and think big.

Healthy Testing Tips
Breakfast is brainpower. With spring testing taking place next month, children need to start out their day with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast can increase attention span, boost concentration and improve memory.
Choose breakfast foods that have whole grains and include fiber and protein. Some ideas for a healthy breakfast include: low fat milk, whole grain waffles topped with peanut butter or fruit, whole grain cereal topped with fresh or dried fruit, shredded cheese on a whole wheat tortilla, hard-boiled eggs and toast, peanut butter on a whole grain bagel.
With a healthy breakfast, the children will be ready to do their best at school.
